Re: JUST A RANT

Oh, but sweetie - there are no resellers on Etsy. Those are collectives - they've shown Etsy their mommy and daddy and bothers and sisters who are working their "family owned" businesses. That is perfectly Etsy legal, according to our rockin' new rules that now allow thee nice, family owned businesses to open up here.

Mind you, they don't show the actual workroom, that has hundreds of machines and workers, most of them children, I'm sure. But we can't be all Judgy McJudgpants, now can we? That's just not thinking globally.

*sweet sarcasm*

Re: JUST A RANT

Are you SERIOUS? THIS ISH IS LEGAL? I didn't read extensively the new policies but thought that they had to at least be handmade by the vendor or at least outsourcing their original idea.. I have been reporting til I'm blue in the face.. Yet nothing is ever done about it.. Sadly I am making preparations to take my business elsewhere..

I hear you. The thing is, if we don't buy from those places, they'll go away. Your pocketbook has power :).

Re: JUST A RANT

I just feel that the power of handmade is lost now.. I have a long turnaround time because I sew everything myself and I can only sew so much in a day.. When my item is listed RIGHT next to something that can be shipped in 2 days vs 2 weeks.. they are NOT going to choose me.. Why not buy from "boutiques" that can deliver a product within 2 days of purchase?!?

Seriously RIGHT NEXT TO CHINA MADE IN SEARCH RESULTS.. Disgusted..

Search AZTEC CARDIGAN.. EVERY item that touches mine is china made..

Re: JUST A RANT

It is very ironic isn't it. When I first opened shop here a few years ago it wasn't this saturated with this stuff. And now it defeats the purpose doesn't it?
And a lot of these shops get tons of sales. :\

Re: JUST A RANT

Right? 473 sales and just opened one short month ago? That "boutique" is going no where... And that's just one of the MANY.. Unfortunately people really don't care of it's handmade.. But I value that fully.. There's a lot of blood, sweat and tears over my business.. I am just so saddened..

Re: JUST A RANT

Emphasize in titles "handmade by me" or some such. The buyers are also frustrated by being tricked into buying sweatshop products when they think they are buying from artists. It is true that the people who shop Walmart on Thanksgiving won't care, but most buyers care. Shout it from the rafters: I Made This

Re: JUST A RANT

Report, report, report! If you can find evidence that the item was purchased from a wholesaler (or is available from an online retailer), click the "report this item" link and include a link to the off-Etsy website. I did this many times with a seller that had "vintage" items that she tagged as retired, even though they're currently being sold brand new on the brand's website. I reported the shop so many times it's not even funny. The last time I reported I included a major rant and the items were finally removed from the shop.

I found the item you're talking about by searching the image URL on Google. (click the little camera icon when searching google images) I'm in the middle of checking the site to see if any of the shop's other items came from there. I'll help you out and report everything I find. If you want to send me a private convo I'd be happy to supply you with a link to the website.

Re: JUST A RANT

I make olymer clay beads and honestly have stopped listing them on here. There has been a huge wave of commercial clay beads and canes that are so cheap that I cannot afford to keep listing. I did a quick search for clay "nail art" and more than 3/4 is just factory produced junk :(

Second question.. Aren't they told who is reporting you?

Re: JUST A RANT

I don't think so. I just reported a bunch of items that I found are also being sold elsewhere by googling the images. One item was listed on a site that connects businesses with manufacturers in China.

Re: JUST A RANT

Thanks Judy I really appreciate this. A simple google search shows the items are china made.. It's just so disgusting to see this on Etsy when this is a place that use to truly value handmade and attract buyers that really support that.. I also just found SEVERAL china made items listing on here that has the manufacturers name clear across the picture.. What on earth..

Re: JUST A RANT

I was reported when I first started because I used the word "hooter hider" which was a trademark name by the company "hooter hider" and had no idea of all the legal business when I first started.. Now I know.. But when I was given the report it told me who reported me and even gave me his contact info. (It was the CFO of HooterHiders.

I think it's different when it involves trademark & copyright issues.

Re: JUST A RANT

That I don't understand is if buyers come to Etsy to buy handmade items, why they purchase from these shops that clearly are not handmade but resellers or factory made?
That's don't make any sense to me......

Re: JUST A RANT

They don't know any different. Or they don't care. I want to vomit a bit each time I go to the Jewelry Browse categories and see all the cheap, factory made necklaces that the Admin here are just CONVINCED are handmade by one person.

Each and every piece I make is unique - it's sterling silver sheet and sterling or fine silver bezel with stones that I've selected. The backplates are hand sawn from sheet, the stones are hand set in the bezels, the whole thing is polished by hand or with my Dremel tool. And my sales this year were doing much better - until about August or September. And then Chad announced that we were allowed to outsource to manufacturers (as long as they're disclosed and have sound, responsible business practices, of course). But the factories from those other countries do not have fair or balanced business practices, and we all know it.

Horrible working conditions, children working in the factories - we all know that's what's happening. Admin knows it, too - they're more concerned with their bottom line than what the site was originally started for, which was to support handmade artisans.

I've got three shops here - but I will also tell you - I've got two stand alone web sites for my products. Etsy ain't the only game in town, and they don't deserve all my hard earned money.

Re: JUST A RANT

I don't even bother reporting it anymore. It is just too much. Anyway the fact that there is so much china made and resellers out there on etsy made it very hard for someone like me who was looking for qaulity handmade items to give as xmas gifts to friends and family. I wanted to give items that were made by one person or a small group of people and that was hard to find. It should not have to be on etsy.

So if I were to pull out and go to my own dot com how do you get sales? Or drive traffic there?

Re: JUST A RANT

I use Twitter and Pinterest a lot. I don't do Facebook at all anymore - too much drama. All my business cards point to my sites now, instead of Etsy. I set up on Weebly, and it's free for two sites. I just upgraded my jewelry site to business, which includes a better e-commerce platform, but there are lots of options out there for setting up your own site.

Re: JUST A RANT

I searched "AZTEC CARDIGAN" and it doesn't look like you have a whole lot to worry about (in my opinion). Most of the others are vintage and I didn't click on all of them, but only a couple looked like possible resellers and were more expensive than you. . .

Re: JUST A RANT

I used that example but this is in no way about me...this is about the amount of resellers that are now on Etsy and nothing is being done to stop it. I cant sit here and report all day long, I have a business to run...sadly, after much consideration this weekend about all of this, I will be pulling out of the Etsy community very soon :(

Re: JUST A RANT

Who matters to Etsy any more? The mass producers, cheap factory made sellers or the true hand made? Who gets them the most money? It isn't us.

Rachel, keep your feet in etsy and open on other venues as well. It may be a little more work, but it gets you found on more search engines.
