Item TItles- Can you help?

I want to clarify some advice I have been given after reading through Etsy help, forums, and team threads. It seems unanimous that the first 3 words used to describe what an item is are crucial ever since search changed from recencty to relevancy.

My question now is, is it best to put general category descriptions first (dangle earrings) before a more specific descriptor like gemstone/color/material/ or shape?

If anyone would be so inclined to preview some of my item titles and critique, it would be much appreciated! For example, the following listing, should I put dangle earrings first, and then copper or pink? Seems dangle earrings is so general, however, I don't see how you can beat the crowd and get listed first?

Thanks!

For this listing you could try: Copper Dangle Earrings - Pink

Since you have a a lot of large copper earrings, try mixing up your titles for better SEO. I.e Long Copper Earrings - etc
Large Earrings - Copper, etc
Copper Earrings - Dangle, Turquoise, etc
Hope this helps, I'm going through the same thing with my store.

Thanks Emma! I suppose variety could be good.
So you think large/long descriptors can be used first over hoops or the stone?? the more detailed I heard should be last, thats whats confusing!
I will change a few and see what happens. I am not very well versed in how to use the views/shop stats yet, but I suppose thats for another thread~!

Emma's advice is great. I would also incorporate her advice in your descriptions as well. The first few sentences is very important for SEO.

Re: Item TItles- Can you help?

I have found after changing some names, and trying to search for certain key words, that specific order is important. For example LARGE DANGLES may result in only one one of my earrings within first 3 pages, however I have tons of large dangles for sale. If the title doesnt include those two words in that order, it wont show up. THis makes me question using something like "long copper earrings" because unless someone searches for exactly that phrase, it wont show up.

Copper earrings is a more likely search probably, but so how can long factor in that example? May be wasted. Perhaps trying to use 'long earrings' in title name for some and then "copper earrings' may be better. Ahhh confusing!!

Re: Item TItles- Can you help?

I'd try pink copper earrings, then repeat it in the first few words of your description and put those exact words in a tag (if they'll fit). I'm assuming pink earrings and copper earrings are popular searches. I recently discovered that "drop earrings" is a popular search term for dangles as well.

Re: Item TItles- Can you help?

Thanks Judy, I agree that 'pink earrings' may be a popular search as well as 'copper earrings', however I dont believe 'pink copper' is a common search. Therefore I question whether 'pink copper earrings' would even be helpful since they wouldnt show up if someone entered pink earrings, only copper earrings would.
This is where it gets tricky. I suppose its up to us to decide which is more important to list- pink earrings vs copper earrings.

Good to know about 'drop earrings'. After this little trial and error I am beginning to wonder if 'dangle earrings' is redundant. Perhaps we only need one of these words!

Also, what do you think about hyphens in title-wasted space, or good for organization?

I'd advice using google adword tool. For one of my Jewelry , when I did a search and made a title change using Big Hoop and Multi Hoop I started getting more views. Why dont you try that. BTW.. I love those earrings :)

Thank you for the information on the Adword Tool- I had not heard of it before and often struggle with tags.

Re: Item TItles- Can you help?

The adword tool is great to help with your titles and tags. But don't forget, the first 3 words of your title aren't the only way that you're being found. For example, if I'm shopping for jewelry on etsy, I'll search a keyword of phrase that I specifically want like amethyst, or flower. After getting those results I use the categories to narrow it down- so that's when I'd get to clicking on 'dangle' within the 'earrings' category. I find it's an easier way to see what I want. Maybe that's just because I'm an etsy seller as well and I live in the world of search terms and tags, but I'm sure others search that way too. And sellers are buyers too :)

When I was revamping my other shop (February Jones- which needs to be restocked) I did a lot of research to choose good tags and titles that would help me get found. I used the adword tool to check each one of my tags and title keywords to see what to keep. You can also use adword to see what other keywords are being used for a specific kind of item. I kept a record of all the words that get the most search results, and also noted which of my shop specific terms get any hits to see if I should still use them or not ( ie: Quantum Rosette, which are stud earrings that look like little wire metal roses)

When I redid my listing titles and tags, I used a few different combinations of terms for exactly the same item (colours were different) and saw what kind of search results I got over the next week or so. Some items got more views and hearts than others so I had the opportunity to see if it was the difference in titles and tags that caused it, or something about the item itself like the colour. By the end of it all I had a good little format for my titles and my Quantum Rosettes ended up with one of these two titles:
1) Nickel Free Post Stud Earrings. Clementine Orange. Wire Wrapped. Quantum Rosette. Inspired by Physics, Science. Wire Rose.
2) Stud Post Earrings. Royal Purple. Nickel Free. Wire Wrapped. Quantum Rosette. Inspired by Physics, Science. Wire Flower.

So the most important terms ended up being: Nickel Free, Post, Stud, Earrings. You can see how I changed up these terms so that half of my listings had "Nickel Free Post" first and the other half had "Stud Post Earrings" first. I listed the other terms in order of importance to the item or branding for my shop.

It's tricky stuff to figure out in the beginning, but the more you do, the easier it becomes. When I redid this my shop had probably around 75 listings- it took about 3 weeks to perform the research, test out terms, redesign my titles and then change them all. And the best part? It worked! My listings were much easier to find, and my buyers found exactly what they were looking for.

...AND! I gained a bunch of great skills that I've applied in my second shop; it's great to start with a new item and know exactly what information you need to find out to create the best listing for it that you can.

Okay. I'm done now. :)

I struggled with that same dilemma with my owl necklaces. They're copper and pewter - what do I want to highlight? My necklaces didn't come up very high in the search results for either of those keywords. They're not one of my more popular items (I finally sold one on Tophatter last night).

Re: Item TItles- Can you help?

Thanks Jaya,
Actually, my next conquest is to finally use my Google Adwords credit of $100. I have felt bottlenecked moving forward by the fact that I am unclear on how to structure a campaign vs ad groups. Perhaps you can help? Here is another thread I started regarding the issue:

Thanks!
