Is it better to focus on one type of product?

I've been doing some research on successful sellers and there's a pattern emerging - consistency! All the successful shops seem to focus on one type of product repeated in lots of different ways be it cushions, scarves...whatever. So, in the light of this it might be wise for me to choose one of my product categories and focus solely on that. I could concentrate on just cushions or just brooches or perhaps start different shops for different products. Oh I don't know...
Thoughts please.

I think your shop is cohesive because your items all have the same look with the birds and nature designs. Personally, I'd get bored creating and selling the same item day in and day out. For shops that do that and are successful with it (and actually enjoy it), I think that's fabulous. There's room for every type of shop on Etsy. :)

Sarah - you have a great shop! Coming from a collective shop I don't think that you need to have all the same types of items to be successful. We have had 100+ sales since opening this past summer and for us that is great success :) You should do what you enjoy!

Wow, what a great shop JamyLisaKristi. Even though the products vary you have managed to achieve a style thread throughout which is really quirky and distinctive. Clever!

Sarah I agree with everyone else! Certain things work for certain people. Id get tired of making the same thing over and over myself. Stick with what you love and go with your gut! Its rarely wrong :)

Your items I beautiful!!! I fav'd a few :) I would just say work on increasing your inventory, and promote, promote, promote!!! Work on your titles, tags, join a few more teams and post on the forums, and promote!!! Keep it up! Is seems that you are headed in the right direction. :)

Thanks for that advice, the titles/tags thing is something I overlook but am realising it's fairly crucial.

I agree with the other responses - do what you love to do! If that means branching out into a second shop with different types of items, go for it! Or, if you think sticking with one product type in lots of different variations will be something that you enjoy and are willing to work hard at, do that!

I am asking the same questions of my own shop lately, but I finally know the answer for myself. The nice part about being on Etsy is that your shop can be whatever you want it to be - it can take any road you want it to take, and no choice that you make about direction will be "wrong"!
