Is 'Sandy' having an impact on delivery times?

I sent out parcels to New York and Brooklyn at the beginning of last month, the one for Brooklyn has only just arrived and the one to New York not arrived yet! It normally takes around 10 - 14 days for parcels shipped from France to the US to arrive, is it because of the latest weather situation? I am getting concerned now about shipping internationally. Are your parcels taking longer to arrive?

The New York City and New Jersey areas were hit very hard by the storm. Many of the areas still don't have power yet (some towns were wiped out, sadly). I think it's safe to say there will be shipping delays in and out of those areas.

Re: Is 'Sandy' having an impact on delivery times?

Angela,
As Judy said the area has been devistated. My sister lives...uh used to live...in Ocean City. (she is fine...grumpy but ok) It is simply not there any longer. My post office said it may take 3 weeks or longer to get a package there. IF they can still find "there". If they cannot deliver it I will offer to sendit to an alternative address for them.

I'm in Tennessee. I could drive there in 10 hours. I sent two orders out a week ago and they have not arrived yet. It may be a bit OCD but I keep up with package tracking so I sent my customers a quick note letting them know I was tracking their package for them. They may not even see the note for a while but when they do they will know I was looking out for them and sending them heart felt prayers.

I wouldn't worry about shipping to the U.S.. Just communicate with your customers. Your shop is lovely by the way:)

Re: Is 'Sandy' having an impact on delivery times?

I have an order ready to ship for a customer in Long Island City, NY. I alerted her prior to Sandy's arrival that I may delay shipping but would let her know. She didn't respond. So I guess, I'll check again on Long Island City but that doesn't answer if cargo planes are getting in. Not sure of what to do.

Oddly enough, I just had a customer in New York City last night ask about materials we had discussed a couple of months ago. Once I get back with her on the info, I'll ask about her welfare.

Re: Is 'Sandy' having an impact on delivery times?

I'm in NJ, about 15 miles from the shore. I was only just returned to power last night since losing it Monday around noon. Our local post offices do not have power. We are receiving very little mail as it trickles in, but they are unable to process the bulk of it without electricity. We are on gas rations, there is a curfew in effect for the area and most businesses are not up and running so I would say without a doubt, yes.. the hurricane and aftermath of it is going to have an effect on anything being shipped into this immediate area (NJ and NY for sure.)

There is nothing we can do other than hope and pray that they are able to sort all of this out as quickly as possible. I have seen power trucks in the area from VA, SC, GA etc. all trying to get everything back up and running but there is a ton or debris and trees that need to be cleared before they can even begin to work on the lines. Most of this area is decimated. I have seen people having to use their furniture for firewood to try to stay warm and the wait for gas even with the ration is up to four hours. Houses/offices are washed away. The lack of mail and being able to receive/make deliveries is definitely an inconvenience and I can only hope my customers understand. My priority though has had to be keeping my four children safe, warm and fed as well as possible and I'm sure it's no different for the local postal workers in affected areas.

Re: Is 'Sandy' having an impact on delivery times?

I've held packages that were going to NYC since the storm and written convos explaining why, but even before the storm, and despite the fact that I'm right next to the city in CT, the only place I've ever had items go astray was New York City. (And that happened 3 times!)

They have a huge mail system, and right now they're having huge problems with delivery and all kinds of other things, as everyone else has said (and as you suspected); either one of those facts on its own would be enough to delay a package for a month.

Both together makes it impressive to me that one of your packages made it to Brooklyn in ONLY a month.

I'm in New York. I don't have heat or hot water, but somehow I'm still getting my mail. I think there was only one day when the mail didn't come at all.
