Inventory & "item numbers" ??

I am VERY excited because I just got an absolutely amazing version of quick books which allows me to inventory track. (I needed this desperately BTW).

Anyways, I am assigning a numerical "item #" to everything I sell so I can input it into the system and be able to keep track going forward.

My question to you all is, first, do any of you do this? How do you guys keep track of your inventory? Also, if you do have some type of number, where do you put it in your listing so that its not some random thing that customers have to deal with but is still apparent enough that it will be useful to you?

We actually just started this, and we love it! It has made everything so much easier!
We have the inventory written down right now, but we are going to be putting them all in Excel. We have started at 001 and have just kept going up when we purchase a new item to sell. We have columns next to each item that have the weight, description, and pricing references so we can price it correctly when we post. When we do post, we put the number at the very bottom of the description, so it is out of the customer's way when they are reading. Hope this helps!

I don't have inventory per say, but my digital items need a number to help distinguish them for bundles. I just put the item number at the end of the title so when the item sells I don't have to go into the listing to find the number, it shows up in the sale email I get.
