Im torn......

Do I sell out and cram as much information, tags.. into my titles and info to get views and hope more sales???? I just hate the way it looks and I don't know if it will even benefit my views/sales.. Can anyone maybe give me some perspective on if it worked or If they think it looks good or bad...

Re: Im torn......

For searches, it would benefit you to put "Fine Art Print" in the first part of the title, and the name of the piece later on.

Re: Im torn......

The first three words are the most important. Take this listing

http://www.etsy.com/listing/77323432/felis-catus-russian-blue-mix-85-x11-in

Try to think like a buyer..I would title this... Cat Art Print, Russian Blue
put this in your tags too!

Re: Im torn......

I sold out and now have long cumbersome titles, but it has helped with views. You have to repeat the keywords in the description & tags too.

Re: Im torn......

With my art i just feel like the title of my piece should be the first part of the title... cause its almost like why even put the art title in there at all... A lot of mine are the scientific names of the animals and i know no one is going to search that but Its the name of the piece...

Re: Im torn......

as an artist I understand, but you have to look at it this way, do you want to sell your art, or just have pretty names for it? you can still put the name in the description, and even on the back so people will know it after they have bought it, but in the long run, it's not going to matter what you call it if no one finds it.

Re: Im torn......

I understand how you feel artistically, but if people don't know the titles of your artwork in advance, they can't search for them, and you won't show up on searches or get views.

The name of the piece can be at the end of the title and in the description, but as far as having a business on Etsy is concerned, the first three words should describe what it is you are selling.

Re: Im torn......

You have to decide whether you want to stick with liking the way it looks with your title as, which is not likely how buyers will search... or title and tag your art the way you think a buyer might search and save the name of the piece at the end, and include it again in the description.

We've all had to make choices to be relevant to our buyers, if we want to sell our products... and I don't consider it selling out, because if done properly it will increase your views, hearts and sales... and that's what we're here for ;)

BTW, cramming your titles with keywords isn't necessarily the way to relevancy here or with google... for one thing, their cut off is about 70 characters... plus it could have just the opposite effect, because they may penalize keyword stuffing.

Titles should identify the item at the beginning with relevant keywords and phrases, then embellish a bit if you must with a bit more info and/or add your creative name. Use those same keywords and phrases again in your tags and of course repeat them in your description, but try to make it as readable and as grammatically correct as possible for the sake of your buyers and google.

Re: Im torn......

It is up to you if you feel you need to put the title of your work first, but it will never be relevant and no one will ever search for your title, so you are losing an opportunity to be found. Put it at the end only if selling is your first priority.

Re: Im torn......

I don't think you're 'selling out' but you are on here to sell and if rearranging a few words is what it takes to sell your work then I think you should do it. You can include the painting title somewhere in the listing if it's important to you.

I hope you don't mind but I'm going to make one more suggestion which is to loose the ornaments etc in your photos. They're distracting and don't really 'say' anything about your paintings. If you can crop them out your paintings will stand out more. Trust me, I know photos are difficult to get right, I've got plenty of re shooting planned for the new year and I'm no expert it just my personanl opinion that your work would look better without anything around it.

Re: Im torn......

Your art is beautiful and eye-catching, but I'm pretty sure no one is going to put Zentangle or the Latin names of the animals into the search bar.

Look at your shop stats. Scroll down. What search terms have led people to your shop? Start there for titles and tags.

Re: Im torn......

Owls are hot right now, but I would type:
Owl print
Owl painting

I would not type the Latin name (because I don't know it!)

Re: Im torn......

I tried "selling out" a while back, made my titles slightly longer and then wrote all the keywords again at the beginning for the description. I've actually seen more views, no extra sales though...

Re: Im torn......

I would suggest trying to find a compromise between how you want listings to look, and "selling out." It's your shop, you should be happy and proud of it. I was told by many to change how I did my listings and add more for a long time. I did, but added lines to make "sections" within the listing. To me, this didn't look as "bad" as those really long listings.

Good luck. Remember what your goal is: to sell, or to be happy/proud of your shop. You can work towards either one or both.

I think the new title looks great. You do want to be found.
