How to love Twitter

Hey, I hear a lot of chat, so many people just don't get the appeal of twitter. So I put together a post that highlights what makes Twitter so enjoyable for me, maybe it will give you some insight on how someone can absolutely love twitter: davsart.wordpress.com/2013/08/01/why-i-love-twitter/

Also just a few quick tips that I didn't include in the post:

Engage! Don't just tweet to yourself, reply to tweets, even if you're replying to someone who isn't following you back. Did someone pick the first cucumber from their garden and you happen to have done the same? Tell them so. People are more apt to follow back if they know you're willing to interact.

Bringing up gardens, follow people with interests you have in common. You make jewelry? Great. But I bet you make lunch too, follow a variety of people. If a jewelry seller only follows jewelry sellers the odds are slim that they're going to care about links to your shop.

And talking about links... Links/self promos are totally ok. BUT in moderation. No one wants to feel like they're following a machine. Give us something to chew on. Oh my god, did you just finish that final season of _______? Tell us, but no spoilers! ;)

Oh and spoiling, that's the worst, when you follow someone only to discover that weeks go by between each tweet, be active. It takes two seconds to write a tweet "working on something that I can't wait to share!" "This latte is heaven." "My boyfriend is wearing socks with sandals again. >.>" let us in!

The best thing I've heard to describe Twitter, which I find true and one of the reasons it's me favorite social platform is this: Facebook is for the people you have to know, Twitter is for the people you want to know.

I was on Twitter for maybe a year robotically tweeting links to my shop, my feed was full of links and spam, I didn't get it. What was the appeal? Finally I did some spring cleaning, found people with common interests and starting treating it like a local coffee shop where you go to have fun, relax and chat it up, now I get it. ;-)

Re: How to love Twitter

I'd say that if you are thinking about joining twitter, join as 'yourself' for a while to get the hang of it and get whats ok and whats not... you'll soon be annoyed with etsy people promoting all the time! Then you can ease your business in a little by little.
I linked in to the local area (people/businesses etc) first, plus my friends, then found bloggers I liked etc etc. Twitter is dull if you are talking about etsy following only etsy people, but with a wide circle of interest its brilliant, I love it!

I'm not seeing a reply option on your posts, so I'll just say Vicki, your idea is a great one for people getting started. Kathy, haha! I think so too, I was hoping I wasn't the only one, sometimes I wonder if I have an oddball sense of humor and was wondering how others would react to the tweets I chose to highlight. Katie, I will follow you when I get on my desktop! I'm @Davenportant so you know who I am. :)

I forgot to talk about hashtags, but they're active on Facebook now too so I'm assuming most people know what they're about by now. ;)

Re: How to love Twitter

I LOVE TWITTER! It's my main source of income through my fashion website. I have also found twitter is helping me build a community with my Etsy shop, It's wonderful because I can communicate instantly with my potential costumers, get amazing live feedback, start discussions about new products and everything beauty related, it's amazing and #hashtags are the bread and butter of twitter, yes FB is using them now but they don't work the way they do on Twitter. I know, I use twitter and trust me on FB it's NOT the same.

I have 4K followers on my 1st account and only 158 on my Etsy shop but it's less than a month old, feel free to add me @amornaturals :)

Re: How to love Twitter

I recently joined Twitter and have just over 100 followers.

I agree totally that when people only post their Etsy stuff constantly i dont always read the post, i skip by and try and find something interesting or funny to respond to.

I try to have a balance of a bit of Etsy and a bit of chat.

I'm not sure how Twitter will make my business grow? I don't seem to get many views in my shop from there.

Re: How to love Twitter

Helen, I mostly use twitter to chat it up, or talk a little about whatever is currently going on with me, I rarely talk about etsy, but on the occasion when I do share a link I get quite a few views. I think it's because when people are interested in the person behind the product they're more apt to be curious about the product and click on that link.

Re: How to love Twitter

Because my shop facebook account is linked to twitter, anything I post goes through which is good because I post other things besides my items on my FB page -- I do a happy birthday to artists born that day including images, suggest websites and articles, salute shops I like, mention music playing that day. Since I don't list a lot of items at a time, 1-2 and I sometimes only list every other day. This way, people aren't overwhelmed with my listings.
One thing I am very annoyed by, though, are the many people who retweet, retweet, retweet. Someone told me that it was good etiquette to RT everyone who follows you. Maybe. But I don't. I retweet sparingly. Otherwise, it seems mindless, lacking consideration and actual interest in what is being retweeted.
I'm also not fond of all the people who post inspirational quotes as if they had nothing else to post about.
I read a lot of blogs about social media and one thing they repeat over and over -- content, content, content. If all your tweets (or FB posts or any other social media posts) are quotes, shop listings, retweets of other shop listings, or endless updates on where you are and what you're doing, then no one will want to follow you.
So I strive to make my content at least remotely interesting and I am getting response to my artist birthday series, to the occasional funny cartoon I post, the occasional art inspiration piece, and even my own listings. It takes work and dedication to do it right and I think I finally hit on the right combo.

Re: How to love Twitter

Lin, I think it depends on who is following you as to what they will and won't like. I dislike quote tweets too, but I want to know what my friends are doing, where they're at, what they're eating etc. I also dislike mindless RT's I only RT stuff I think is super funny or promos that I actually like. I personally don't enjoy facebook tweets because it ends up in another link, most of the time whatever is being said is cut off and turns into a link to FB, I like to think that the people in my feed are on Twitter, not somewhere else and just sending their posts to twitter from a different social network. But again, that's me, everyone has different things they prefer. That's when it just comes down to tailoring your feed into what makes you personally happy.

Re: How to love Twitter

Some great advice here. I've been on twitter for quite some time now and still don't really get it. I'm still trying to work out who to follow and indeed how to find them.

Re: How to love Twitter

I love Twitter! I do not use Facebook...no interest. I would like to point out that, there are some of my followers who I would love to follow back, but all they ever post are links to items in their shop. I don't want that clogging up my feed. Please, please try and post something every day or two that does not include a link. ;) /endrant

Re: How to love Twitter

Hilary, sorry I'm not seeing the direct reply to your post option from my iPad but, how I find a lot of people to follow is just by putting into search something that interests me. For example pretend you are in the middle of watching Battlestar Galactica and you're loving it. So put Battlestar Galactica into search and browse through the tweets, see who's saying what and if you find a tweet you like follow that person. This gives you an instant conversation starter with them and you know you have something in common.

Deborah, thanks I will check that out. :-)

Danielle, I was not liking FB either until I started treating it a little like Twitter, I don't post as often but I use hoot suite to preschedule posts and have started just posting about things that I love along with the seldom shop promo, my food posts get the most action. ;) and I totally agree with your "rant."
