How to define your target market?

Hi everyone!

I hope you're all beginning the new year with the right foot (it's a way to say good luck in Portugal).
I am struggling with defining my target. I have always seen my creations as fun, and I would say that they are directed to people up to 30, who like funny objects. However, I have realized that most people see my creations as adequate for children (I often hear the comment "I would buy it if I had a daughter"). So I leave you with two questions, one to "help me" and one to help everyone:
Who would you say my items are for?
How do you define your target market?

Thanks everyone! I am eager to know what you think about this topic :)

Re: How to define your target market?

I'd say your products are aimed at young teens, or people my age (early twenties) with a passion for playful things. Defining your target market is really difficult. Personally, I have no idea how to define mine. It's at a point where I just imagine that I'm selling to lots of other Me's. I make products that I like, with materials that I like following my own passions. I do my best to find appropriate blogs to sponsor giveaways for, but at the end of the day, I suppose your target audience is you. People will find you, and if you're right for them, they'll buy from you, it's as simple as that.

I'm sorry I can't be much more help.

Also your penguins are adorable.

Re: How to define your target market?

A target audience is that specific consumer who would
a. identify with your product
b. be apt to purchase your product
c. would support your product in the long term

That specific market could be 'age' related, profession related, of collectible related. Finding a common thread that interested target audiences would have in common would also be helpful.

Going beyond the identification stages, think of what the comsumer would 'type' in to find your item. Why would they type that word. If it is important and would help a 'targeted' consumer find your products, then that is the 'tag' you should use.

I find on the internet anyone is your potential target audience. It is more important to tag things appropriatley so that person who is specifically looking for your type of product will be able to easily find it.
Some potential buyers- hobbiest, doll house/model enthusiest, teacher. day care worker, parents, children, teens, young adult, grandmothers. Mostly females... Hope this helps you a bit...

Re: How to define your target market?

I think your target market would be mostly children and teens (female), especially for the earrings and pins. The magnets seem like they'd appeal to a wider age range, from children to adults of any age, still all female. They're too cute for most guys. They're incredibly cute, really.

Can't help with the other question, as I still need to learn how so I can define my target market. So my idea about yours is probably not a very good definition, after all. I have a feeling it's too general, but it helps some!

Re: How to define your target market?

I guess your target market is who you picture buying your items. I picture a quirky, bohemian girl who lives in a city buying my hats. This picture may have no basis in reality, but it keeps me motivated to create new hats!

Re: How to define your target market?

Your products are definitely adorable! I agree that they seem to be targeted toward preteen & teen girls, but the magnets, as Cindy said could be for a broader range.

I'm still figuring out my target audience too, I believe it to be fairly broad, mostly females, young adult (20's) and older.

Re: How to define your target market?

I make my items for myself, creating brings me joy so I just make things I like and hope other people will like them too. As for my target market, I'm sure if you take a look in my shop it does give you an industrial feeling, but to be honest I'd be willing to sell to anyone who is will to buy...
