How do you know where a sale has come from?

Often I see people say that they have had sales from being on a blog or pinterest etc etc but I don't understand how you know it has come from there. I realise stats will tell you where someone came from to view your shop but is the a way of knowing where they came from if it was a specific sale?

Hope that ramble makes sense!

Re: How do you know where a sale has come from?

Lol. That's actually a very good question! ;)

I think maybe people just assume if they see a huge influx of views from Wanelo, for example, which you can tell by looking at your stats, and then also get a bunch of new sales around that same time, that Wanelo probably helped to get those sales there. It can't actually be proven though, since you're right that there's no way to trace where sales are coming from.

I think you can kind of tell if you add one advertising method at a time, and if you start getting an increase in sales, you can guess that that source is "helping" maybe?

Sometimnes I ask a customer how they found my Shop (when I thank them for their order in an email and give them ship info.). They are always nice enough to tell me, and it helps to figure that out!

Sometimes you can figure it out if you use Google Analytics. You can use it to see what the source of views are from a particular city, and what keyword they searched for when they found your shop.

Like Linda is saying, Google Analytics is more precise, but a bit trickier to use than your shop stats. I agree with Patricia, asking a customer how they found your shop or teh item they bought, is also a way to find out. Usually they wouldn't mind telling you.

Re: How do you know where a sale has come from?

I try to see what views came from where at the time the sale came in, some times it actually works, but most of the time I have no clue...

Thanks everybody, I must try and get my head round google analytics. Everytime I think I am getting there with SEO etc it seems there is so much else to learn!

Yes, I am curious about the PayPal survey also. I have filled it out when buying from shops here on Etsy, but I can't seem to figure out how to get it for my shop.

The Paypal survey sounds handy, I'll have to look into that to see if I can figure it out. I, too, would be interested to know where my sales are coming from!
