How do listing results work?

I had my shop shut down for roughly 3 weeks while I did an overhaul and added new things. Before I shut down my items were always on the first two pages of the search results when I would put in keywords. IE- Peridot My olive tree used to be the second to fourth item shown, Now it is on the third page of list results....

1.- Why does it seem like my listing reset in rank.?
2.- What causes items to show up on the first few pages? Number of views? How many times it was purchased? How many people go to your shop from that keyword...?
3.- Is there anyway to get my items back to the top or do I just have to wait it out again?

Re: How do listing results work?

It will depend on what people are looking for.

If I search for 'peridot olive tree' your listing is right at the top of the first page
https://www.etsy.com/search?q=peridot%20olive%20tree&view_type=gallery&ship_to=ZZ

but if I search for 'earth day'
https://www.etsy.com/search?q=+earth+day&view_type=gallery&ship_to=ZZ
I don't see your olive tree in the first 10 pages.

Listings will be displayed based on the titles and tags. If you want to be found for a certain phrase then be sure to have that phrase in both your titles and tags.

Personally though if I wanted to buy a green suncatcher, then I'd start by searching for 'green suncatcher' and going from there. I'd never even think to look for Earth day.

Re: How do listing results work?

Your shop is fabulous!

With over 600 sells, it obvious your shop is getting found . So whats your complaint.... your on page 3 in search instead of page 1 ? A lot of shop owners that work just as hard as you would love to have that problem...

Re: How do listing results work?

A lot of people won't look past page 1, that's the problem, I think. Crochetgal is right--it all depends really on how you want to be found and even, I guess, on the brand you're promoting. Who are you, what does your shop stand for in terms of merchandise and brand?
It's past Earth Day so I don't think too many people will search for that term, but they will search for peridot items. Also items can be really specialized and it really takes that one special person to be searching for your specific type of items.

Re: How do listing results work?

My Olive tree has not changed in title but "used to" be on the first page. After shop closed for a few weeks it is now page 3. I was curious as to why. I am not upset necessarily but tree sales are down quite a bit since re-open. :/ I just wonder how it all works? If I sold that tree would it move up? etc. Same with my nursing necklaces if I renew the same listing with new photos does that help stats?

Re: How do listing results work?

Renewing does help because for a brief shining moment your item will show up on the Etsy front page theoretically showing it to more people.
My understanding is that it takes a while for things to be noticed again by search engines.

The best advice/suggestion I can offer is to just keep promoting your stuff and eventually it'll return. If it makes you feel any better, it took me several months to get any of my collage wall art pieces on page 1 of search results after first listing them. It takes a lot of time and effort to make that happen--and it may NOT happen at all.

Re: How do listing results work?

Update- Within the past week I renamed my items- IE- The Olive Tree, became Peridot Olive Tree, Overcome Me Moon, became Purple Moon Tree of Life...etc. That instantly helped get my item to at least the first page but I was still at the bottom. Got featured in a pretty big treasury today and had over 40 listing favorites on the tree in a few hours and now it is the first item under "peridot" the second item under "tree of life" and I still have trees on the first pages for "wire tree" and "wire tree necklace" I DEFINITELY think that changing my title to the first three words being common key words really helped and I think being featured and getting listing favorites really boosted the shop as well. Thank you all for your kind suggestions! They really helped!
