How do I build relationships with my buyers?

I have heard over and over that it is so important to build a relationship with buyers to get them to buy again etc.
But what are the best ways to do this without coming across all spammy?

I simply offer excellent customer service with each purchase.

I send a quick 'thanks for your purchase' note as soon as I see the sale come through that also lets the customer know when their purchase(s) will be shipped as well as approximately when they can expect them to be delivered.

I also will ask them how they found my particular shop/items in that same email and its amazing the types of answers that I receive.

By doing this it opens the door for further communication and many of my customers have been with me for over 10 years now.

Great idea about starting a conversation by asking how they came across your store!
I have also decided to redo my Thankyou note that I send out when someone purchases so it is more personalised and shares more of me and my story.

- hand written thank you note along with the order
- a follow up coupon for their next order
- include a small gift
- making sure they received the order okay.

Some people care about customer service, others just care about a good deal / cheapest price.
