How do Google Analytics work?

Hi,

Could someone help explain Google Analytics to me? I have just set up an account and it says in order for it to work there is a code I have to post onto each page that I want to track, but where do I post it?

It's all so confusing! Any help would be appreciated.

Go to Your Account > Shop Settings (far left) > Options > Web Analytics

There will be a box that says Web Property ID.

On your GA page, you already have had to enter in your website's URL (www.etsy.com) and your account name (kitsnbits.etsy.com).

You will see a UA-number on your GA account page (where it lists your accounts/web sites). It looks like this: UA-12345678-9

Copy and paste this web property ID into the box on the Web Analytics page on Etsy.

It takes 12-24 hours for GA to start tracking your shop page. You DO NOT need to put a code on each page, just the one UA-number. Even after GA starts tracking your page after 24 hours, it might need another 24 hours to get a day's worth of information. At first there might be a yellow triangle symbol that says "page not tracking." Wait 24 hours to see if those goes away. It should be replaced with a green check when it is.

My problem wasn't setting up GA...it was interpreting them. I know how powerful a tool they can be to change things on your site for the better but I
have NEVER found an article that helped me UNDERSTAND how to USE them.

There are plenty of articles out there about how to use GA. It does take a while to get used to the service, though. For me, it's a bit much for my Etsy shop which doesn't even get that many views. Though I have GA, I find that Shop Stats are just fine for me.

u know google provides videos that explain every part of the whole google Analytic, it'll be easy for u once u get the hang of it.. it's like ur shop stats with more details :D it could be very helpful :)

I have the worst time having it track me rather than tracking others. sigh!
