I see a lot of people on this forum recommending various social media. While it is a free medium to use, not all social media works for all types of businesses. As a result, sometimes it can become a time waster. One I just wanted to comment on is Twitter.
Twitter is really more effective for business to business. So if you are selling jewelry supplies for example, yes, you should be on Twitter because businesses are using it for search. But research has shown that end users are not using it to search for products. When they do search it is usually just the trending hash tags.
But in terms of finding new customers on Twitter, that will likely only happen if a Twitter account with thousands of followers, such as Etsy, tweets out your product, or you have a loyal customer base following you and you tweet them a new product or special offer, or one of your followers retweets your offer to their followers, or you do a sponsored tweet that goes out to the masses. Then sales may result. So have a presence, because it is free advertising, but don’t spend hours on it.
