Help with wording for custom orders/Policy help

When it comes to custom orders, any advice on wording? Should I put it on the item description or my policy or both? Is it common to ask for 50% down and 50% when I ship, or can I request 100% up front? (I prefer the 100%).

How should I word my policy on this?

We have log wood personalized coasters. People will want different amounts so I have them listed for one coaster, but they will order more in a set. If someone wanted to order 50, should I ask for all the money up front?

I can't help you much when it comes to wording things, especially since English is my second language, so I really don't feel competent.
However, when I do custom orders I always ask for 100% payment upfront. None of my customers ever had an issue with it, and I think this is a good way of protecting yourself.

It seems to be a standard to ask for 100% up front... Otherwise (as it's happened to me and I've seen from many others on this team) you could get into a little trouble. Especially with something like wood that you can't just undo it and reuse the materials! :P I think people generally understand that when you are making something special for them, paying up front is a requirement.
I have the policies about custom orders in the listings AND my policies, but chances are you are going to have to spell them out via convo/email to whoever you are dealing with... just the way it is :P I think the wording in the coaster listing is good the way you have it now, because you are telling the customer to message you about larger orders. Then, when they ask you about them, you can tell them how much it will be and ask if should you create a custom listing for them.
I would also have a chart somewhere (I do mine in Excel so I can calculate and double check the percent discount I am giving) with the amount of discount you are going to offer based on quantity. Just because it can get a little confusing sometimes, and it helps to tell the customer something like "For X amount of coasters, I can offer you a Y% discount and shipping would be approximately $Z." Just sounds really professional, and that gives them the peace of mind they need if they are paying you for something they haven't seen yet! (:
Love all your stuff, by the way, it's all very beautiful (including that you work so closely with your kids!) and makes me miss living around so much nature! (:

Re: Help with wording for custom orders/Policy help

It is completely normal and accepted practice to take the full price of the order straight up. You can run into more complications if you ask for 50%. The person may cut their losses and run. If they can afford the item, they can afford the full price immediately.

I feel taking the full amount also sends a strong positive message to your customer. You WILL make the custom order for them. They pay, you make. To take half the payment is almost suggesting they need to consider that you wont make it.

Taking 100% up front keeps it honest. In paying, they 100% trust you to fulfil the order as per your conditions. It's a nice way to keep things.
