Help with keywords!!!!

I don't understand what I am doing wrong! I make keychains, I have searched keychain and my listings don't come up. What does relevancy really mean??? I have all the words that other keychain makers have in their listings but mine don't come up when I search key chain.... what could I possibly be doing wrong??? I would have to type in wood keychain for mine to come up. I would like my listing to come up just by typing key chain. Any advice is appreciated!

Re: Help with keywords!!!!

I'm not sure how to get yours to come up, but I do know that you shouldn't put the same tag multiple times. You have keychain, Keychain, Keychains.....as far as I know these are the same. Maybe put Keychain, Key Chain, Wood Keychain, Wood Gift Tag, Gift tag, Wood Charm

I hope this helps some.

Re: Help with keywords!!!!

Don't spam the same keyword over and over again. Etsy's searchbot doesn't like it.

"Keychain" and "keychain" are treated as exactly the same - capitalisation makes no different to searches. "Keychain" and "Key chain", however, are not the same.

Re: Help with keywords!!!!

From what I've been reading from other threads, you can:

- remove the keyword handmade, it's a given sine that is the premise of Etsy
- make your titles more like "Keychain - Birch Wood, Daisy"

Your items are gorgeous! Try doing some searches using keywords that you think customers would be typing to find your items. Take a look at the results and see how their titles are structured. You might find keywords that you didn't even think of.

Re: Help with keywords!!!!

Thank you for the great advice! I just learned that there is a book out there called Etsy for dummies- I think I may be needing that!

Re: Help with keywords!!!!

One more question... How about pluralizing, should I have keychains and keychain?

Re: Help with keywords!!!!

Plurals don't make a difference.

Natasha, putting handmade still helps. One of my commonly searched terms is "handmade card." Search works based off of "exact" match to keyword phrases. You can have "Keychain - Birch Wood Daisy Pink" and this will NOT match Pink Keychain. A string of random words will not have as much relevancy as a title organized by your optimized keyword phrases. The top results will have Pink Keychain in that exact order in the title. Go ahead. Do a test search.

It also helps to repeat the same keyword phrases in your tags. It's your job to search around and use the Google Keyword Tool to find out what the most commonly searched phrases and terms are for your products.

Don't tag your item "keys." A keychain is not a key. Key words like birch wood/birchwood (your job to figure out which term is more likely to be searched--run test searches) should be mentioned in both your title and tags. What about adjectives such as rustic or woodland? Lots of rustic items on Etsy that you can position your shop with.

I highly suggest the 14 or so articles on titles, tags and descriptions in the Etsy Seller Handbook. Relevant searching is not just for Etsy, it's how you also get views from Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines.

Re: Help with keywords!!!!

Lisa, your items are really fun. I notice that the tag line under your shop banner doesn't say anything about your product. It helped my shop searches when I mentioned the type of items I make, in the first few words of that line.

So, in front of "I hand make the things that make me happy" there could be a sentence that includes keywords, like "Keychains - hand-crafted from natural wood" or something like that.
