Help! White backgrounds. Good or bad?

I saw a thread a little bit ago about all-white backgrounds and it got me thinking about my own pictures. First of all, I have a couple disclaimers. 1. I'm new to Etsy and 2. I am by no means a great (or even really that good) photographer. I'm not making excuses for myself here, I just need some honest advice to help my shop. When I started, I tried to take pictures using creative, vintage-style backgrounds and I just found them to look cluttered or too staged. There's a ton of people on here great at this, but I'm not one of them. That led me to taking pictures using solid white backgrounds. I read earlier that some people found the items to look mass produced or not true to life. All the backgrounds of my thumbnail pictures are solid white, with no variation. Any opinions about the overall appearance of my shop with the white backgrounds. Now the rest of my pictures are on mannequins. What style would be best for my thumbnails. Or do I need to scrap my photos and start over. Any suggestions?

Katie, I like your pictures. It has a unified look (in a good way :-), it is a clean and simple style, shoppers can quicly view the item (dont need to look for it among other suff on the picture:-) and they see the jewelry realistically which I think is important with on-line shopping. I am a fan of your pictures, I wouldnt start over at all!

The whiteness looks fine - they might be a bit bright for my personal taste but there's nothing wrong with them. Are you using direct sun, or lights? Also, I would suggest setting your camera to a higher pixel size in some instances to get really good close-ups of your pendants. It also gives the shop more variety of pics. You want to be consistent, but not boring.

I also like your white background. No distractions and can see your jewelry without it being lost in the pic with other object!

Hi Katie,

The white background works best. It has a minimal look and lets your pieces stand out. I say, go with the current version of your shop, it is really pretty!
Wish you happy sales!!

I like your pics. Photography is my Achilles Heel and I am still working with it (as reflected in my shop @_@ ) but I like how in your photographs your jewelry stands out and there is nothing to distract. I'm sure you will grow as a photographer - there is always room to, right? - but I think your current photographs look really professional.

Re: Help! White backgrounds. Good or bad?

I think your pictures look great as is. I've seen a few people in the teams complain about white backgrounds that they would never buy from someone who takes pictures on the white. Personally, I wouldn't want them buying from me anyway if they are going to complain about such a petty thing!
The reason white is preferred is because its simple, and neutral. No distractions, it makes your products look cleaner, more professional and POP. Nothing about that is bad! Beautiful shop!

I believe your pictures look great! That was actually one of the first tips I got was to use a White background. A few of your photos (white flower on white) where a little bright but not something you would have to change. IMO.
Good job and good luck with your venture! :)

I also like them. I think this is very pretty. I would like to see one picture of it on a person just to see how it lays but that is just my opinion.

Re: Help! White backgrounds. Good or bad?

Thanks everyone for your opinions! After reading that thread I was a little nervous that I was doing it all wrong. I feel better now!

David - I'm originally from Wichita, but I've been living in Olathe for a few years now and I really love it! My husband did his student teaching at Olathe North.

Natasha - thanks for the feedback. I have them on a mannequin to show how they hang, but a real person would probably be better. I'll see if I can find someone brave enough to model them for me!

Thanks again everyone!
