Green Monday?

Anyone ever heard of it? I never did until a few minutes ago when I was on Walmart's website and saw a promotion for it. I had to google it to find out the actual date (it's this coming Monday, Dec. 10, btw).

From examiner.com"

"Green Monday is the second Monday in December, usually a big day for retailers as shoppers begin to realize Christmas is less than three weeks away, and time for ordering items for Christmas delivery is running out."

So, do you have any big plans for your shop on Green Monday? I don't, considering I'd never even heard of it until now.

Re: Green Monday?

Green as in cash? Or green as in don't drive shop online and save the earth?

Never heard of it. Think I'm done running sales. Though the last one was pretty successful.

Re: Green Monday?

Never heard of it either, but I won't be doing anything for it. I spent a vast amount of time advertising and changing tags for Black Friday/Cyber Monday, and didn't see a darned thing from it.

Re: Green Monday?

I'd heard of this http://www.greentuesday.org/m but not Green Monday. Online shopping is even less environmentally friendly that shopping in person, as far as I'm concerned. I'm done with promotions this holiday season. I have another craft show and am exhuasted! No idea how I'm going to get any more items ready in time for next week.

Sara Schroeder from ToosDetectiveAgency says

How so? I would think the simple act of not driving to the store is more environmentally friendly.

I did really well over Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend. Sales have slowed way down in my shop since Tuesday (they've actually come to a screeching halt). Most of my shop consists of holiday items because I just started stocking in October. I'm assuming a lot of people aren't buying Christmas cards anymore. I'm moving away from Christmas and starting projects for the new year.

Re: Green Monday?

Think of how much driving or flying is involved in shipping packages (plus the packaging materials and the manufacturing process involved in them) and you can see that driving 10 miles in your car to a store (and bringing your own reusable bags) is actually better for the environment than online shopping. Having said that, I'd still rather shop online and plant a tree than get within a mile of a mall. ;)

Never heard of Green Monday either, but now I have the song Blue Monday stuck in my head.

Re: Green Monday?

I would think Sara is saying it's less environmentally friendly b/c instead of driving 15 minutes to/from a local store, an item is being driven/flown to other states or countries.

Re: Green Monday?

Stores have many of their green items up front now also because pantone released the 2013 color as emerald. The new trending color but ive never heard of the day, haha. Thats interesting. I dont like green at all but my husband does so its all pretty annoying to me!

Re: Green Monday?

Well, all I know is that online purchases with free shipping are much more friendly to my wallet and gas tank! I'd much rather click the submit button than sit in traffic to get to the mall, then stand in a long line just to save a few dollars on some gadget. All that extra savings is going towards the $5.00 in gas I burned to get there and home. lol My mailman comes every day so it's never an extra trip for him to deliver it to me. It keeps him employed so that he can go to the mall and do his own Christmas shopping. I always reuse or recycle the shipping boxes. The really big ones make great cat toys too. Just ask my Oliver. ;-)

All kidding aside, I shop at local stores when possible. Joann's just got a chunk of change from me yesterday and the small scrapbook store in town gets my money at least once a month. However, most of my Christmas shopping is done online because my kids like video games and electronics. I do a lot of shopping on Amazon because they make it so easy.

Re: Green Monday?

Raven and Abi summed up the reasons online shopping isn't environmentally sound. All that stuff has a huge carbon footprint (all the stuff we buy these days does), plus shipping is so wasteful. Amazon also has horrible employment practices, which you can read more about here, http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/02/mac-mcclelland-free-online-shipping-warehouses-labor?pag... if you are interested. There are so few "good" places to buy from these days, I've found it best not to buy much at all. It's actually surprisingly easy. I was amazing to learn all the unnecessary stuff I was buying. I cringe to think how different my financial picture would look had I learned this years ago. At the same, I struggle with selling more stuff here on Etsy...

Re: Green Monday?

I've never heard of it. There were so many "color" days this year I hadn't heard of! Weirdness... sometimes I miss the less complicated days of yore LOL
