Getting Featured in a Magazine

How do you get an item featured in a magazine/newspaper? Do they send a press pack or are they lucky enough to be "found".

Re: Getting Featured in a Magazine

In 2009, my handmade gift boxes were seen by the editor of Country Living magazine via my flickr. Then she contacted me through my ecovintagevegan etsy shop for sample.

I about fell off my chair. Sent samples in five sizes in August and by October was notified of my standing. That year, several etsy shops had handmade Christmas items featured.

BUT my items were on the flip book COVER and page 13 A. Yeah, it was freakin' cool.
My best year of sells and the wealth trickled over into 2010. The November/December issue.

I still have magazine left and one set of the boxes:

PS I have since moved my products from eco shop to crudeco. Wishing etsy would allow us to access both shops together in the same realm of time.

Re: Getting Featured in a Magazine

I was interviewed by a writer and she pitched it to a local magazine. I was lucky enough to be included in Plank Road Magazine for their summer issue. I know people visited and purchased from my etsy shop due to the article. Try talking to a reporter from a local paper. That probably is the easiest way. Good luck.

Re: Getting Featured in a Magazine

Most craft magazines have submission guidelines on their web sites. Figure out which magazines you'd like to be in, check out their guidelines, and make sure you send them good quality photos of your work. I've had success getting into jewelry magazines yhis way. Good luck!

Re: Getting Featured in a Magazine

That's so great that you both got featured!
I'd love for a magazine to feature my shop, it would really take it to the next level.

I heard that putting together a press pack containing information on your shop and photos and sending these out to magazines can be really useful for getting your name out there. I hope to start doing this in the new year as well as submitting to craft magazines sites as Sue said.

Good luck!

Re: Getting Featured in a Magazine

I was contacted by a magazine who asked if they could feature one of my items in Frankie Magazine. She found me on Etsy and just sent me a convo asking if I'd be interested.

I'm not sure how you would go about asking them, but I agree with Sue, most probably have guidelines... and it wouldn't hurt approaching them directly.

I was also found on etsy by a senior editor of Bead Style magazine and she scheduled to feature a pair of my earrings in the January issue. Sweet!
