Free gift with package

I've gotten a couple of small, free gifts with some orders (some on Etsy, some off) and I know they're not necessary, but would any of you who do it say it makes a difference? How did you decide what to include?

I was thinking of including one of my ornaments with the orders I receive over the holidays, since they're are very easy for me to make, but I'm not sure if I should continue with this after Christmas.

Re: Free gift with package

I always include a free mini print and sometimes other trinkets too regardless of the time of year. I think it makes a difference and is what gives it the hand made touch. (free prints are good advertising too as people often use them as cards to send on)

Also I just got some more moo cards printed and will be putting some of these in every package from now on. There's a free introductory offer on at the moment where you get 100 free, you just pay a little postage. They're great cards - http://uk.moo.com/partner/etsy-business-cards/

I have some really fabulous feedback too and I think this is due to the extra touches. (of course I still have lots of sales which have had no feedback :(

I've received a few free items and couldn't use them so I gave them away. So I'm not a huge fan of free gifts with purchases...

Hey

Well I like to give away free gifts with my items. I usually give away hair clips that are similar to the hair crown or clips that the customer has purchased. I also include a 10% off discount code, and I always put loads of petals in the parcel too to make it that little bit more special when opened. I want the buyer to have a great experience. I recently received a lovely private message from someone who was really happy with their parcel... It made my day

Re: Free gift with package

I send a little gift with larger orders, not with small ones.
I've gotten some great packages with cute little novelty items, very creative and whimsical. But ... it was useless stuff that sat around for ages because I had no idea where to put it and ultimately ended up tossing it. Still, it was very fun to open that package.

Re: Free gift with package

I always appreciate a free gift, but it wouldn't determine whether I decide to become a return customer. I always include a free bead or two in my packages, but it's more because I have so many odd beads laying about that didn't get included in my bead sets. I figure if someone is ordering beads, they might be able to find a use for them.

Re: Free gift with package

When I package my ornaments I put them in a pretty/cute gift box... I enclose a hand quilled gift tag just like the ones I sell in my shop... it's nothing much but it's something that I hope will be used as it coordinates with the box that I am also hoping is going to be reused. For much larger orders I will enclosed something a little more substaintial but still coordinating with what they already purchased thinking again that it wil likely be used as it is of similar style color, etc

Re: Free gift with package

I like getting something extra in my packages, but it depends on what I've ordered. I ordered soaps one time and got samples of some of the shop's other items that I actually used, but I wouldn't order from them again because of poor service. When I ordered photographs from a different shop they were packed very securely, but it was a 'no frills' presentation. In spite of the lackluster packaging, I ordered from the shop again because I really liked his work. It's more important to me that I get good customer service and that my order is wrapped nicely and securely than getting a pretty package full of freebies.

I've included freebies in my packages from time to time. For my jewelry shop, I'll include a pair of earrings or other small gift for my repeat customers, my first time customers get a coupon code on the back of a business card. In my other shop, I've made something little and quick to include with each order so far, but I may not have the time to do this as business (and school) pick up over the next few months. I always include a thank you note too.

I think the idea of adding something extra for your holiday orders is very nice, but it's not necessary to continue it after. Personally, an ornament would go onto my tree right away if I got it in November, but in February it would probably get lost or thrown away before the following holiday season. If you want to continue to include a freebie after the holidays, I'd suggest that you include something appropriate for the season. :)

Re: Free gift with package

If I am able to, I include a free sample of another treat I sell. It's DEFINITELY gotten me repeat customers!

It would vary on what you sell. I include complementary samples in my orders however i don't announce this on my shop. Samples are a great way for potential future orders.

Re: Free gift with package

I give out a 'free surprise gift' from my shop for every 10th sale. On my 20th sale the customer bought a pair of earrings, so I as my free gift I gave them another pair of earrings.

The customer was thrilled with both pairs and hopefully I will have a return customer.

Re: Free gift with package

I send a really cute handmade card along with a coupon code for free shipping. I've had a customer use it and buy another item a second time around. I sell lampshades and dream catchers, I'm not really sure what I could throw in as a freebie that is why I stick with a coupon code :)

The Christmas ornament would be nice though, I would hang it on my tree if I received it for free with my purchase :)
