First shop page

Something I've just learned, through the generosity of some Etsy sellers, is that it's possible to promote another person's entire first page by clicking on the first two boxes in each line. (Someone just did that for my shop.) I realized I'd allowed some of my "older" items to linger on the first page when I actually wanted the page to be seen with my Spring items as the first look into my shop.

I've changed tags, titles and other things to keep my shop up to date, but it hadn't occurred to me to re-arrange the first page so that it also looks at its seasonal best. Kind of like changing the window display, I guess, so I thought I'd pass that on as a suggestion others might find helpful.

Re: First shop page

I'm confused on exactly how you do that?

It's not like the items in my shop turn over at a fast rate, but I usually have anywhere from 1-4 sales a day, so my first page is constantly changing on its own. I gave up on rearranging my shop a long time ago.

Re: First shop page

I didn't mean to be confusing. There's a function in your shop where you can rearrange items, move from one page to another, bring something forward, push something back, put things in color coordinated groups if you like that visual flow. It doesn't take long to bring some items front and center again so they get attention when they might have been languishing at the back of your shop. See the function on your first page called "Re-arrange your shop."

If your confusion isn't about that but is about how someone can promote you as a way to support your shop or give you a boost, there's a way to do that so every item on the first page of your shop shows up on your activities feed. It's just a way of helping each other.

When someone did this for my shop, very kindly I thought, I discovered that the items that came up weren't the ones that I would necessarily pick if I had been aware someone might do that. So I just went in and re-arranged my shop with my strongest pieces more prominently placed. I'd let that slip my mind.

Does that clarify?

Re: First shop page

you mean by "favoriting" your first two rows of items?

Re: First shop page

All you mean is someone has favorited your items. As someone who has been around for a while, I favorite items every day. I get it now, but I don't think there's anything magical to it. If people favorite an item of mine, but they are in zero circles or have their favorites set to private, it doesn't do anything to promote or boost my shop, because no one else can see their favorites.

Besides, I WANT people to go to page 2, that's why people say the more listings you have the better.

Re: First shop page

Okay, I understand what you're saying now as I went to look at my activities feed and see that you favorited alot of my items. I do appreciate that, although Megan is correct in that only the people in your circles will see that. I also favorite items and shops every time I see something I like.

Like I said earlier, I don't worry about rearranging my shop. It's a fruitless effort when I renew listings or add more and I have everything separated out by Sections where people can go if they want to find something specific. Personally, I like a hodgepodge of things, it gives shoppers a better idea of what they will find if they go deeper into my shop.

But every little bit helps, so thank you very much!

Re: First shop page

You aren't preventing anyone from going to page 2. This is just a way some Etsy sellers are helping to promote your shop. That's all. It's done in the spirit of good karma, or that helping one of us ultimately helps all of us.

What I'm trying to say is just what I learned from this. Someone posted my entire first page on a feed. That was lovely of that person to do. It brought me a lot of views and favorites I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. At the same time, I realized that not all of my best items were still on page one, but had fallen back to pages 3-4-5. I wanted to make sure I had my best things right out front. I'd let that slide a bit.

If that happened again (that someone did me such a favor), I wanted my shop to look its best. So all I was saying is that it helped me realize that I also needed to keep my shop looking fresh by bringing some things forward that had fallen back, and pushing some things back that had been front and center for a while.

You're right that there's nothing magical about this, but if someone features or favors you, and that person has a lot of shops in their circles, they DO help by exposing you to many more people than might otherwise see you.

It's a good thing when this happens.

Re: First shop page

Ya know, and this may be just me, but I'd actually be kind of offended if someone went through and favorited everything because they thought they had to (pay it forward, as you suggested), rather than because they actually liked the item.

Re: First shop page

I guess it's all in the way we look at it. I can easily see that you (and I) might prefer to have someone choose only the items they really love. But if I look at the big picture, I see that they're doing a nice thing for my shop (and me). By doing this, they're just trying to drive some views, favorites and business in your direction.

This thread isn't meant to approve or disapprove of this. It was just meant to say what I said. In the process of having this done for my shop, I realized I needed to do some upkeep within my shop itself. I thought it was worth sharing that thought, and hope that some of you will benefit from it.

warmly,
Meredith
