Finding Target Customer then Promoting to them

HI,

I wonder if anyone with experience could give me some tips on how to promote to my "target audience". I have the worksheet that Etsy created and I am going to fill it out when I have thought about it for awhile. But my question is: once I have figured that out -- HOW do I find that audience?? I do alot of promoting with social media (FB, Tumblr mostly) but I how do I know I am getting to those people? Essentially, how do I find that customer that is going to **love** my shop and keep them coming back?? I don't want to expend anymore wasted energy on promoting if I am just blowing to the wind, essentially.

Thanks!!

This is exactly what I would also love to know/learn.

Yes, I would like to know how other shop owners have "found" their target audience.

My target customer found me. I made things (and a LOT of them) that I knew they would like and sure enough, they came and bought. Your target market is already here, you just have to find out what to make that they want to buy.

Your shop needs to be unique and memorable, and you NEED to have an edge.

Good luck! It's hard work making and listing, but it's been so rewarding for me :)

Re: Finding Target Customer then Promoting to them

Also, you have to think about what price points they WILL pay (not can afford, reasonably, what will they pay) that's in both your sweet spot and theirs. How will your items set you apart from your competition? Do you even have competition? How will you do things differently that customer's will remember you by?

Solve a problem for them. For example, my target customer likes to 1. express themselves 2. be socially/politically active and 3. care about being culturally educated. They may not have that much money, but their desire to express themselves is a NEED.

After these things are addressed, everything seems to fall together on it's own.
Hope this helps...

Re: Finding Target Customer then Promoting to them

Yeah, the prices really trip me up. I don't think I can change prices too much until I figure out WHO is my target audience (for instance ... I am thinking that 30ish - 40ish year old Moms are my target audience and if they are career people and care about style, they are not going to buy something at a low point b/c they will think it's cheaply made but if I make it too high then they are going to expect more than I can give). I also need to figure out what things I am making are more popular than others. I can make MORE of those things, once I figure out what people want from me. I do have a different style, so that helps with being different. I guess I also need to figure out WHO I want to cater to, also (isn't that the other question?? :)). I started out wanting to do alot of baby things but I see how hard it is to do baby things on Etsy when there are so many baby boutiques AND they all have great newborn models :). Alas, I don't. So now I am thinking I want to make more things for little girls and women. Maybe men eventually too.

So thanks ... wish I was like you where your customers FOUND you :). You have done great with your shop, Mallory! I am hoping that maybe I can create a niche and turn my store into something really special this fall, after this big show I am doing. 12 more days....

Re: Finding Target Customer then Promoting to them

Don't even worry about all the negatives that are thrown around. I paid 0 attention to all the "but there's so much competition", "I'll never be found with over 5+ million items", and "it's too saturated, I can't do that" mess. People have been saying those things since the beginning of time, and yet new fabulous business sprout up everyday. If you are good at it (and you're willing to work for it), you'll attract attention. My shop was slow to start because I was thinking, "what can I make that will be popular on etsy?" when I should've asked myself, "what am I passionate about? how can I fit that into my shop/brand?"

But also, I didn't just magically have products that sold. I opened my shop to sell prints. Literally 0 of those things are in my shop today. I poured my heart into so many things that didn't work. Posters, coasters, magnets, pottery, pendants, and stud earrings. Of those, the stud earrings are really the only thing that has worked for me. Just don't feel deflated when one thing doesn't work, wait around for a bit, and start something new. Eventually you'll find your niche.

Oh, and good luck at your show! I have that on my list of things I want to do!

Doing a show actually SCARES THE EFF OUT OF ME. So many people to talk to.... ugh... I'm shy and weird!

Re: Finding Target Customer then Promoting to them

I totally agree with Mallory. I had so many items in my shop in the beginning--and too much variety was killing my shop. I was making and listing too many things that nobody wanted--or that very few people wanted. After about a year and a half I found a niche, and since then have really focused on it. Scarves, not tea wallets, are what sell in my shop. And when I started making and selling scarves, my target market has slowly but surely been finding their way to me because I'm offering a product that my target is looking for. I had this idea of a target market in my head before, but wasn't even offering products my target market would want. So you have to make sure that what you're selling really matches what your target market is looking for.

Also, if moms are your target audience, they're looking for affordability. High price points don't usually work with moms. Career women and moms are totally different markets (with totally different definitions of "affordable"), so make sure that whichever one you're targeting is not mixed up with the other.

Re: Finding Target Customer then Promoting to them

Mallory -- sounds like Etsy is JUST for you then :). I am a total people person (why I am a good retail pharmacist, too) ... I started this shop with all intentions of doing fairs. I am really nervous I don't have enough inventory -- and I don't want to take too many orders b/c I want to really throw myself into my Etsy shop when I get back -- and this is a BIG show.

Amy -- yeah, I am kinda thinking about a niche in my head but it just needs to come out into items. I haven't gotten there yet and it may take awhile to transform into what I am thinking of ... and with the career women vs. mom -- many career women ARE moms. They are probably more likely to pay higher price points. I have many friends that have several kids but they also have 50 hour professional work weeks (and they have bought from me :)).
My sister, on the other hand, who is a single mom is incredibly frugal and will probably NEVER buy anything from me -- nor anyone like her.

So yes ... if go for the stay-at-home Mom or the single Mom then I probably need to do some price adjusting. But a career woman -- maybe I need to just change up my inventory a little bit. :))

Thanks all ! If anyone else has any advice on finding their target customer, and how to reach out to them, lemme know!!

Re: Finding Target Customer then Promoting to them

Mallory- love the advice about not focusing on the negative, I totally need to stop thinking that I will not be found amongst all the competition and just keep making. I really relate to making items that may or may not sale while waiting to find out what will sale! It's tough!

Re: Finding Target Customer then Promoting to them

It can really take a long time to get enough sales info to define a market. After a year, I am startingto see the outlines, but it is like looking at the foundation of a building, and trying to envinsion what will be built on top!

Re: Finding Target Customer then Promoting to them

Good advice, Laura ... I always wondered that, too. But I also agree with others above that if you define your target customer -- and make things they need/want, they will come. I think Mallory defined her target customer not long after opening!!

I have lots of ideas after this thread ... thanks everyone!!
