Etsy Direct Checkout

Anyone using this? I've been notified that I cvan sign up for it. Etsy fees are higher; you have limited access to payments made and you don't have the instant shipping label and mail discounts that PayPal offers. Granted you can go to PayPal and manually type the info in but that's a pain. Any feedback from anyone?

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

I've signed up for it - over a month ago, and never got access to it. Apparently its supposed to attract a wider audience aka the people who refuse to use PayPal, but I haven't even been able to use it so I can't say!

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

I'm with Maggie. I signed up for it as well, and I have not heard back. Apparently, it's taking a long time for people to actually obtain it because everyone wants it.

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

I signed up for it and mine has been active for a bit now. My ten day hold is actually up as of yesterday! So Monday will be my first 'deposit'. I'm very very happy I signed up for it because I got 5 orders out of it! That I think I may not have gotten otherwise. The fees are a little higher, but it's not that bad as long as you price your items correctly/appropriately.

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

Mine became active about 8 days ago, my last 4 sales were DC. There are pros and cons, but numerous buyers don't want to go the Pay Pal route. I am happy buyers have choices, just like in life!

Your target customer base will increase in numbers, they have new options.

Just like Shannon Marie from LittleFever said, price your items to sell.

And listing new items, thanks Etsy.

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

I got notice Friday, signed up Saturday. Had my first customer use it last night. So not sure why some aren't getting access to it right away. I know there are cons to it but it is nice to offer it to our customers. :)

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

I'm not sure if attracts customers who other wise would have not bought from you. I've had a couple people who I have conversations with prior to their purchase and they used it. They had a track record of feedback on Etsy and everything, which meant they have used paypal before. It's just another way to pay. It has about the same fees at Paypal. The only draw back is waiting on the money to deposit. People who need the money upfront wont be inclined to use it.

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

Are the fees really higher when you factor in that you are no longer incurring PayPal transaction fees?

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

I did the math:
DCO is better for items priced up to $50 (they are equal at $50).
PP is better for items over $50.

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

That's good to know since my items are lower priced items!

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

It's a trade-off. Pros & cons for direct checkout. My last 3 sales were via direct checkout so I'm thinking it's giving me business I otherwise wouldn't get if I only offered Paypal. Customers seem to really like the direct checkout, makes their lives easier.

But they do take a percentage of your shipping fee, which Paypal doesn't do, so that's a disappointment for me. And you can't pull from your Etsy Direct account/purse to print shipping labels so that kind of sucks. But like I said, it does seem to make customers happy.

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

It is such a great convenience for the customer I think it is wise to sign up. A little extra cost is not an issue, I will factor that in when I do my review of costs.

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

Jaime -

I'm pretty sure PayPal takes a percentage of the whole amount sent by your buyer (including shipping and sales tax) too.

The numbers I gave for whether DCO or PP is better are based solely on item price, so the exact numbers including shipping could be a little different from the $50 mark I gave. The real break even point would depend on your item price + shipping + sales tax to calculate exact fees for both DCO and PP.

Your items are priced below the breakeven point between DCO and PP, so you would probably end up keeping more money if a customer paid you through DCO.

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

If we choose to use DC will we lose PAYPAL costumers?

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

You can give them both DCO and PP as payment options, and they can choose which one to use.

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

I am so glad I found this discussion....I was just about to ask about it myself.

I have started using it and my first customere was an etsy employee who was excited to see I excepted DC. My sales have risen well!!!

I just had 5 sales and waiting on one other reserved one in 2 days and they all seem to be buying through DC.

Draw back is I have to wait to receive money until I ship and still waiting from the first sale UGH. I have custom orders and so I can't ship right out.

I was told my money would deposit today in bank and now I am told it will take 3 days or longer.

I will have to work out the kinks, adjust my prices and so forth.

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

I signed up for it when I first opened my shop and have not heard anything yet. I am starting to think that it is going based on number of sales. I just started getting some last week

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout

This is such a helpful thread!!! THANK YOU to all of you!
Another question.....does everyone that already signed up for this have a tax id for their business? Is it necessary to have that to accept credit cards?

I seriously doubt if even half the people using Etsy have a tax ID. You can collect money without one, but it's really important that you get all your business stuff figured out right away. You need to know what is expected of you as a business owner, and it's much easier to do everything correctly from the start than it is to go back and figure out how to fix things or track your finances.
