So I got a notification about Etsy direct check, and I'm curious to see what everyone is thinking about it at this point.

I personally love that you can utilize it easily, which could make it a whole lot easier for customers when checking out.

I noticed though that their fee is more than paypals though. Pay pal takes 2.5% and $0.30. Etsy will take 3% and $0.25. So if a customer pays you $34.50. Pay pal will take out $1.16. Etsy will take $1.29. I know in the end it comes down to a few cents, but I personally hate paying a processing fee to begin with and feel like it has the potential to add up over time.

Plus reading the FAQ section it seems as if you don't have the protection that paypal offers you in case of fraudulent charges. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it's paypals buisness to deal with transactions and I have personally called them to take care of a transaction issue which they helped me out a great deal. Etsy's FAQ section says that you have to solve it with the customer and take it to Etsy if that is not working.

Another concerning factor is that I noticed you don't actually receive money from a payment until after you have actually shipped the item.

I'm not complaining, just trying to run an effective business. I guess I need more thoughts and opinions/facts before I make my final decision.

So what do you all think?

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout -- What do you think?

I honestly hate the new checkout system, I'm sure ill get used to it, but as of right now, the fee is more then paypals, I cant even print shipping from it, and I'm still getting used to remembering to see that I have orders in there (I have other shops and they all use paypal so its easy to manage my load on one site).

I've opted out too. The majority of my sales are made to order and my lead time can be as much as two weeks. Meaning it could be nearly 3 weeks until I got paid! This would be a serious interruption of my cash flow.

Also, I haven't seen any real answers on how disputes will be handled and I don't like the notion of funds going into my personal bank account, meaning I would have to set up a separate account. Or send it to Paypal, which would take even more time. Right now everything goes into and comes out of Paypal, which is linked to Outright for tracking it all. The shipping isn't an issue for me because I use Stamps.com and it imports the info directly from my Etsy shop, but if I were still using Paypal for shipping and couldn't decide, that would make up my mind for sure!

Re: Etsy Direct Checkout -- What do you think?

I think it's a great idea! I have a Pay Pal account that I use for purchases and for selling, and I find it to be easy to just type in my password, click a few buttons and be done with it, but my mom, who's a bit old fashioned and not very internet savvy, is often confused by Pay Pal. I've tried showing her a few times and even showed her hwo to use it without an account, but she still gets confused. It's easier for ehr to go to a page that asks for her information and her type all of it in. Before Pay Pal got as big and popular as it is now, that's generally what she had to do for any site. Having Direct Checkout is a great way to catch those customers who feel deterred or intimidated by using Pay Pal. Plus, the more ways we sellers have ot get paid, the more potential customers we can reach out to.
That being said, the rates might be slightly higher, but it might be income from a sale you might not have gotten in the first place if you only had Pay Pal.

BaksaDesigns from BaksaDesigns says
I hope that etsy does not make Paypal obsolete that's all. But, once I print the shipping label from my printer, it is marked as ship...so technically i should get my money as soon as I print the label

-------------

They can't, not for a long time, as Paypal is worldwide and Etsy's Direct Checkout is still availabe to part of the sellers in the US alone. They would have to make it work worldwide so international sellers could use it.
