Emcee Followup to "How to Ace Social Media" Online Lab

Jump to solution
Hi everyone! I'm Sandi, todays Online Labs Emcee. We'll continue the discussion here to help each other out.

Please share your top takeaway from the lab. If you have a question that wasn't answered, or you need clarification on something, you can post it here as well.

There was so much great info today, but one thing that really stood out for me was choosing one social media platform to start with. Think about what platform best matches your personality, the personality of your shop/product line, and your customers instead of just choosing what's hottest right now. (I started with Twitter, and am just getting my feet wet.) Get comfortable with using that platform, before branching out. You may find that it works so well, you won't need to use any others.

I'm really excited about Emceeing today! I look forward to hearing what all of you contribute.

Hi! I liked the idea of planning daily posts (e.g. supplying shopping Monday, links to your items on Fridays etc...). I'm definitely going to try that - I'm very random at the moment!

Hi Stupid (although, you're obviously not!),

Yep, I like the planning idea too. Right now, I have overall and daily To Do lists, but they're too often blown to shreds by things that turn up every day. Hard when there are so many daily life priorities outside of our Etsy business, but all the more reason to have a plan and lists. Those help me make progress when I do squeeze in time for Etsy work.

In my full time job I work random long shifts, usually during unsociable hours, so planning social media time is often awkward. But I do a lot of travelling by train, and stay in a lot of hotels - so my posts tend to happen when I'm on a train, or in a hotel room at 4am! I'm not a big fan of scheduling tweets - they always bug me a bit, especially if you respond and they don't as their not online. But I'm going to try and start a vague plan of what sort of thing to post on certain days (even if it's just a rule of "Only indulge in self-promotion on Fridays"!), without getting boring and repetitive! :-)

I too like the idea of scheduling posts, otherwise I'm consistently random as well, though I do integrate shop listings, process and my stuff from life, mainly on FB at least weekly. I have a fan page that I usually post to first then share to my regular feed---I find (according to FB at least) that my "reach " is significantly higher that way. Guess that's my tip, lol!

The webinar really echoed what I was already thinking about...engaging my followers more. For instance, I have a lot of musician friends that I don't really engage with that much so I think my "posts of interest" may revolve around really cool guitars...which I love anyways though I don't play....sometimes the artwork is fantastic.

Anyways...thanks for doing the Live Feed!

Hello!

My name is Ingrid, I opened my Etsy Store the lasts days of july of this year and one month later I opened my Facebook Business Page.

Since that moment I added the link on my "About Page" and on each list I already had. I tried to post 2 or 3 times each day different kind of things related to the vintage style.

But.... I only have 3 likes from my bff, my hubby and I but nobody else :(
Today I will strat with the SCHEDULE FACEBOOK CAMPAIGN from http://etsy.me/1K9Q9wa

I realize by the comments on the Lab's chat that Instagram and Pinterest are the most popular channels for Etsy, but I'm not acquainted to them.

Do you have any piece of advice for me???

Scheduling posts was the tip that resonated most with me...I'm usually posting on FB/IG/Pinterest as an afterthought once I have listed items and it seems sometimes I get a lot of notice ( likes or hearts ) and sometimes nothing at all!
I need to study the relevant timing and spread out my posts over the week instead of a blast of them at midnight ;)

Hello,
My name is Ann and my shop is Twinkerbellz Designs. The session was such a coincidence because for the past 2 weeks I have been working on my facebook. Posting at least once a day. It has helped with my views. I am very good at Pinterest (that one is soo very easy), but I have no clue on twitter or instagram. I have accounts but just dont understand them. I need twitter and instagram for dumbies I guess.
My point is you told me I am on the right track, so thank you!

Re: Emcee Followup to "How to Ace Social Media" Online Lab

My posts have been totally random, so I think I will try to work on scheduling posts a bit more. My main social media platform is tumbler but its more on my personal interest rather then my shop though I do siphon some of that activity to my Store . On the other hand, I have found my personal Facebook page has been taken over by my store clients and I can no longer share any personal information on that.

How do you say no, when your store client asks to be your friend on Facebook? I didn't know how to, so ended up adding them to my personal FB and now both my Facebook pages , Etsy Store and Personal page are all overrun by my Store. I basically no longer have a personal FB page, rather two different FB pages which my customers can access. My Etsy Store FB posts automatically to my personal FB and my Tumbler also crosspost automatically to my personal FB, so in a way all my accounts are connected.

The only advantage I find in having my personal FB taken over by my Etsy store clients is that I did build a loyal customer base and they are repeat customers who requests for custom orders again and again. Only problem is that there are a couple of them who are really obsessive and my personal page has become a platform for posts on their obsession. I can neither unfriend or block them without losing their business.

What does one do in this instance? I can do with some advice, if you have any for my case. Thanks

.

It was mentioned in the lab that there would be a quiz to help people find the best SM for them posted on the Success team. Any information about when it will be available?

Hi all,
Great info so far.
Quick question...
Which social media platforms allow pre scheduled posts? I have business accounts on FB, IG, Twitter, and Pinterest but need to be more consistent with all. I love the idea of diversifying posts and pre-scheduling them.

Thank you for great social media info today ~ I had already decided way back when to mix both the personal and the shop. To me, the combination is definitely more interesting, not to mention easier to handle as well. I do try to mix things up a bit with my posts and I try to make them kinda fun so people will want to follow.

Here's where I can be found ~ my faves are twitter and instagram...of course, like anything, they are always a work in progress!

BTW ~ I took the quiz ~ *Social Media Personality Type* and learned that I am a Visual Storyteller! Fun!

Susie from Birdicatt,

I also have a personal page and a business page and most of my customers are part of groups I join on facebook, so naturally, they see my page instead of my business page. When they come check me out, then they send me a friend request because they want to stay in touch with me because we share the same interest. I send them a message back saying I'm pleased they want to follow me, and here is my business/hobby page for that. I 'apologize' that I prefer to keep my personal page only for people I've met in real life and thank them for understanding. Most respond back thanking me for pointing them toward the more relevant page.

You could let your current client/fb psuedo friends know that you are trying to clean up your 'confused' facebook accounts and to thank them for their patience. Then just do it. If they get mad, apologize for offending them and let them know that you love discussing whatever their obsession is and that you thought it was more relevant on your business page where other people with the shared interest would see it. Best of luck!

I manage my business page from my personal Facebook page and it can get confusing. Is it possible to separate the two or do I need to start anew? Or should I leave it be? Thanks for any insights!

Thank you so much for your advice. I am going to try that so I can keep my personal page away from my business clients without having to accept every "friend" request from my clients.

Thanks so much!

Re: Emcee Followup to "How to Ace Social Media" Online Lab

So interesting that the previous posts are talking about the business vs. personal pages on FB, that was my exact question. I though we HAD to have both, that FB required both. I have no interest in a personal FB page, and have a VERY hard time with the two. I don't think any of my few followers see anything I post on my business page, and I was told not to post my business stuff on the personal page, that people don't like it, it's spammy. So after a year, my business page is pretty much non existent and I have a personal page that I don't want, or need. So then I was wondering why at the outset of the On line lab did they talk about if you wanted to have both personal and business. ( like I said, I though you had no choice ) Seems very confusing to me...
Thanks for the helpful info though, I liked the thought of learning one well first, I've been struggling for year, pinterest is easy, I love it, twitter is pretty easy, don't see how it helps though, and facebook to me is a confusing nightmare! ugh.... After a year, I still can't see how to access the page of someone who likes my page so I can reciprocate.....I must be blind or stupid!!
