Down payments not allowed?

I read in the forums that having listings for down payments are not allowed. I have a listing for custom order bras where you pay $10 for it and I can make a listing for the rest of the amount once we discuss how much it will cost. Is that not allowed?

I really would like to know if I'm breaking Etsy's rules or not someone please help.

Im not sure i thoght this wold be ok as if its a custom order then you would want a deposit upfront to buy materials and to ensure the customer doesnt switch thus leaving you with a load of unwanted suppies..be intresting to see what others have to say

I do not see anything specifically in the Seller's Handbook that says you can't use a down payment for items. I usually ask for 100% up front and detail in my policies what exactly is refundable, particularly in my bridal clutch shop. I usually will not do custom work for anything less than full payment, although I can be flexible, depending on how I feel about the convos leading up to the purchase.

OK - according to EtsyHelp - on Twitter - the listing has to be an item for sale. Therefore, down payment listings are not technically allowed. What they suggested was letting your customer select Other as their form of payment - I guess you then invoice them through PayPal for however much you're requiring for however many months you're accepting their payment.
