I do post my things to Pinterest but when I try to do a search for them they do not come up in search results. I don't know what the trick is to get your stuff to come up in the search results. With out that you are kind of stuck hoping that the couple of people that did repin will have their followers see it and repin also or buy.

If nothing else, it will provide your shop with inbound links which will make it more popular for Google search purposes. :-)

I do use Pinterest quite extensively. I am hooked on it! It is fun to add things to the boards and try to figure out how to incorporate your items so you are not promoting too many of your own items.

I am also using pinterest. But when I signed up I read that we can not use pinterest to promote our shops and etsy shops was one of the named. So, maybe that's why you are not finding yours own pins?

I just found this on pinterest terms:
Avoid Self Promotion
Pinterest is designed to curate and share things you love. If there is a photo or project you’re proud of, pin away! However, try not to use Pinterest purely as a tool for self-promotion.

Well, it is true that says "try not to use", maybe this is it and I was wrong! :)

By the way, Etsy has their own pinterest boards. Do you know how to appear on them?

i have a board for my jewelry but i spend more time pinning items to my etsy board... hopefully i'm not self promoting too much, but sometimes i pin new things i'm excited about listing... think that's ok?

I'm using pinterest lots, just got hooked on it.

I have not used it for self promotion yet as this seems to be discouraged. Might give it a go, fairly subtley though as I see it primarily as a good place for inspiration.

I was using Pinterest until the legality and copyright issues came up, it's a great idea but I don't want to hand over the rights to my work to Pinterest, and i don't want to be sued for pinning someone else's work either

I know it's not likely to happen but they can use any picture I pin, sell it on and make a fortune from my work and there's nothing I can do about it.
I really enjoyed pinterest and I gained exposure from it but until things are sorted I'm not pinning.

Marta - I use Pinterest for promotion, but that I also promote a LOT of other people's sites and items - probably less than 10% of my pins are to my own shop.

There are always people that are worried about being sued, etc., but I just don't live my life that way. I post (pin) pictures of things I like and want to share with others and trust that others do the same. I mean no harm to anyone else, and don't expect harm in return. Life is too short to worry so much!

Janis - apparently you have to have 5 people sign up under your number before you can use it. A clever strategy on their part to get more users real quick, but pretty annoying for those wanting to use it!

I have really conflicted feelings about pinterest. I love it... but the legality issues are sketchy. I took down my account after realizing that I couldn't identify the source of most of my pins and that really bugged me. I'm thinking of giving it a second go and making sure to properly credit my sources. (Link With Love has lots about this! http://linkwithlove.typepad.com/ )

Pinterest is why I have a signature on all of my images on my blog and on Etsy. It's so easy for attribution to get lost in the re-pinning shuffle and I'm not so much worried about someone outright stealing my photos as I am just about things getting passed on to the point where if someone actually *wanted* to know where it came from, it'd be tough to trace it back.

Exposure is great, but from what I've seen on Pinterest, it's pretty easy for your work to gain exposure... but very, very difficult for *you* as an artist to remain connected to the work once the photos start being repinned.

I do not use pinterest. I cannot control if someone pin's my work. I take a risk no matter what just by being on the interenet. I don't use pinterest because like others have mentioned, I don't want to inadvertantly violate anothers copyright. And, PInterest does copy the full size image and the links can be changed so it wont necessarily stay linked back to the original source.

I think the idea of Pinterest is great. I am waiting to see if the legality and copyright etc issues get worked out in the future.

You have to go in to your pinterest settings and click OFF the search engine button.

If the button is on then your pins are hidden from search engines.

I was able to use Pinterest right away. I did not need anyone "under" me. I did however need a Facebook account to join AND had to be "invited' by someone. I do remember there was a post about another similar site where you did need to sign up 5 in order to use it.


In general:
I don't think it's against policy to "pin" Etsy items as there is a pin it button with every listing. I pin many of my own and others.

I have a few boards and really enjoy the ease of use. I like to follow fashion, pop culture, retro stuff and have picked up some amazing recipes. Not to mention cool places I'd like to visit!
