I have searched previous posts in forums so I pretty much understand what direct views are. However, today I listed a new item and it got two views from direct traffic so I'm now confused. Direct traffic is views outside Etsy, right?
I don't use Pinterest and Twitter and I have not linked my shop to Facebook. I don't have a blog. So, how am I getting views from direct traffic on my latest listing not long after I listed?
Do you get views outside Etsy on your latest listings?
But you should, girls! I think direct traffic are visitors that comes through google search or other engines... I don't know much about that. But, why don't you tweet or facebook your products? Blogger is fantastic as well!
Valeria, Google and other search engines show up separately in stats. I've gotten direct traffic before I've had a chance to tweet my listing, so I've often wondered how brand new listings get direct traffic so soon after posting.
It shouldn't be counting your own views but stats haven't been counting right or in the right category for some time now. For example - etsy views have appeared in direct traffic and direct traffic has appeared in etsy views. See the Bugs forum.
Your own views shouldn't count but I'm very convinced that they do and I have noticed that for quite a few months now. Sometimes, I go into a listing or several listings and change something and without logging off I check stats and there is a view for those same listings at the same time I was in. Even listings that don't normally get lots of views or often. This usually happens in the mornings, UK time, but I haven't paid much attention in the evenings.
Last week I sent a message to Etsy and they have their engineers looking into that as they seem to agree with me.
I do agree, I have gotten views on my listings that I get slightly excited about then realize thaaat was just me haha. I'm not sure where direct traffic comes from exactly though-- sometimes I thought it was just someone who had the link and then opened it from another window like an email or a site..
I think if someone pins your item on their pinterest boards, then that would get you views. I pin stuff all the time from other sellers and I don't think they would know unless I told them or they found it on my boards somehow.
My understanding of where some of direct traffic comes from is that it comes from people who have you bookmarked. I'm also wondering how rss feeds work in this context. Does anyone know?
So, I'm on a website, say etsy, and someone has a backlink to another product in their shop, and I click that backlink (in the description section). Is that a source from etsy or direct traffic??
Every once in awhile when I'm browsing Etsy, I'll stumble across something that I really like. While I may not buy it, I will share it with my Twitter and FB followers or even on Tumblr and Reddit.
Your direct views could be coming from someone who just likes your item/shop enough to share it with their followers.
Ok, but I don't have a twitter account and I have disabled the FB link. And I don't use Pinterest or anything else. Can others still click on things and share my shop and my listings?
Direct traffic is when someone is directed straight to your listing, whether it be through another person's "favorite", facebook, twitter, etc. As long as the direct link is to your listing.
I thought the views from facebook, say, are shown separately. The same with views that come from someone else's favorites and activity. I have seen a separate line for these things in my stats...
I don't promote through social media so I sent a message to Etsy to get more information on how these things work here. Thank you all for your responses!!
Jennifer - I'm surprised at that description. It doesn't seem to include folks clicking the listing from somewhere like others favorites. I thought that was part of direct traffic. I do know that when you post something to facebook and some other similar sites just the posting in itself increases your views by one.
I think this is a bug. I've read about something like this in the bugs forum where people are saying their direct traffic shows up as Etsy views and visa versa.
