Oh boy...yet another dilemma. Direct checkout or just stick with Paypal. What are you all doing? I use "Square" in person (at craft shows) and that has really helped my business. But I don't really think I've lost sales because I only accept Paypal. What do you all think??

I've always used USPS shipping, even though I was only accepting Paypal. So that won't make much of a difference for me, if I choose to accept DC. Entering mailing addresses isn't really THAT much of a pain (IMO) so that's not much of a concern. I'm still on the fence!! (So Jaime...you said that you'll "keep DC for now". Does this mean that you can change back to Paypal at any time??)

Judy, I offer both Paypal and DC. You can toggle them on and off as you so choose very easily in your account (under the Shipping & Payments section).

I'm thinking I'll keep DC around for another month and see how much business I get from it and if it's worth the hassle.

I love DC... within a day of turning it on, I had 3 sales... and that after a bit of a dry spell. Now after almost 2 weeks, 90% of my buyers seem to prefer it, so I'm very happy with it.

Actually DC fees are a few cents cheaper on lower priced items than PayPal... unless you're a high volume seller receiving the PP discount on fees.

You can still ship thru PayPal with http://www.paypal.com/shipnow by copying and pasting the buyer's mailing info for the shipping label, and if there are no funds in your PP account, they'll just deduct the fees from your linked bank account.

I think it's imperative to offer as many options as possible to our buyers, just as any other online site does. And, you can assume you've never lost a sale because you only offer PayPal, but how would you ever know? What I do know is that many detest PP for whatever reason, so for those buyers DC is perfect!

BTW, just so no one assumes buyers are somehow lured into using DC just because it's the default payment, they're given the option during the checkout process to go back and change their method of payment with a very obvious blue link that couldn't be missed... so they're not just following the path unawares, DC is their obvious preference.

Mine was just turned on, and I haven't had any sales from it, so we'll see. I don't like that they hold money until you ship (because as someone already stated, when you do custom orders and take pre-payment for supplies, there are too many risks involved).

If sales pick up from it, I'm sure I won't have complaints, even when there is an issue. But since it's done nothing for me so far, I am still a bit skeptical about some of the details.

I have used it and quickly shut it down after my first sale with it. This is why: My bank account wasn't verified yet, so there is the initial 10 day hold of my money. There is not the convenience of using the funds in your account to pay for the shipping label. Also, you can't pay your Etsy bill with those funds either.

For me, this was the pitfall as I rely heavily on those funds to pay for shipping and the bill first before I transfer the money into my checking account.

If you keep funds in your paypal account, then I guess DC will work great for you.

Good news though, I did write Etsy support about it, and they said that these changes will be coming soon. They hope to bring the shipping tools, etc. to use all in one convenient option.

So I plan to wait until those changes are made. But, in my opinion, I think this will work great some day and be a way more convenient way for customers to check out :)

Thank you Jannysgirl! I have been resisting because of the hold on funds and wanting to use those funds to ship. I really don't like how I can't use the funds to pay my Etsy bill, that would make sense. I like paying my whole account Etsy, due or not, as soon as I have a purchase.

I really like the idea of writing to Etsy support about why I don't want to use it, yet. I don't see where they would lose any money by releasing the funds earlier or automatically (if wanted) using the funds for Etsy bill. I am going to do it on Monday when there is bound to be people in charge to read it.

I am just waiting for these bugs to me worked out then I am willing to "finish" signing up.

I just accepted it. I don't know how much it will help, but it certainly can't hurt to have more payment options available, especially for people who don't want to open a Paypal account. I think it's a good service, and am grateful to Etsy for making it available.

Besides, I think it's going to save us some Paypal fees. The fee for this service looks much smaller. Am I right about that?

I think that it's 2.9% and $.30 for Paypal and 3.0% and $.25 for DC, Meredith. So it seems to me that it kind of evens out in the end?? Someone correct me if I'm wrong? Obviously, math is NOT my strong-suit!! :)

If you do the math, you'd find that DC is actually cheaper for items under $50. The fees are the same at $50-$55, and PayPal fees are higher for items over $55. Keep in mind that the item price would include the shipping fee because both DC and PP charge fees for the whole amount collected from the buyer.

If you are lucky enough to sell more than $3,000/month, you can get a discounted fee rate from PayPal, and then PayPal would always be cheaper.

I agree with @SerenityInChains from SerenityInChains with all her concerns. Until they get addressed I will not be activating my DC. All of my orders are custom made to order. I cannot take the risk of creating an item and then not getting paid.

I have it. It's not my preference, but a sale is a sale. I don't like that I have to wait to withdraw my funds, even if the item ships right away.

So say I ship an item in 1 or 2 days, well I still can't request a deposit until 3 days after the sale. I find that very strange.

And I have a custom order through DC right now that I can't get the money from until it ships, which could be another week or so. I hate that.

After much back and forth trying to decide, I activated it a few hours ago. I opened up a small business checking account just for this. Pay Pal has always been an excellent way for me to keep it all separate and I didn't like the idea of linking my personal account to direct check out. A few hour later, I have my first sale with it. I'm excited and nervous at the same time! I'm hopeful that the things we all agree we don't like about it will get updated quickly! I'm optimistic for now but will continue to follow other stories on it and keep everyone posted with my own. Tough to beat Pay Pal, that's for sure!! :)
