Did you change your style for Etsy?...

...when you started selling on Etsy and looked around, did you change your original "vision" and product styles to suit the Etsy marketplace?

Did you regret doing that as a "sellout" or embrace the changes as "selling more"?

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

Well- I started to use Adobe photoshop to touch up prints, and I now work a little more with attention to filling in spots of my paintings. Also- I can breathe a sigh of relief- because I can edit away ink issues-
So- the answer would be "somewhat"

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

This is an interesting question. For me I didn't have a partcular style in mind when I started my first etsy shop. It sort of evolved over time. I think looking around on etsy and choosing favorite shops (many of which are successful and see a lot of sales) probably had a bit to do with where I am at now with this new shop. I do in some way try to emulate them as far as product photos, descriptions etc. but I'd like to think when it comes to the actual product that I do my own thing for the most part. I might be inspired by a certain color combination or technique I've seen used every now and then.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

No. My style is something that comes from within so I'm expressing my own particular style.

I'm also a no. I began with an idea for creating my own jewelry pieces that emerged from a love of artisan beads, and though my personal style has changed as I've developed new skills, I haven't adapted anything to fit Etsy except the way I title my items.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

No.

When I started on etsy, the artists drove the marketplace. It's only been in the last year or two that etsy followed the west elm/anthropogie/urbanoutfitters trends.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

I make what I love. I do throw a few "trendy" things into the mix, but I prefer to make what comes to my heart and head than what Etsy wants me to make.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

Answers run the gamut!

Amos touches on an issue of improving technically, rather than style change, I think. Others see no need to change.

I think some folks would say they've seen an opportunity, changed a lot to accomodate it, and chased it. Others are very successful with their original design ideas.

Well said, Erin. You can always tell when you've got a good idea, it starts popping up in other shops. :)

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

I haven't changed my style... my items are just what I want them to be and I expose them here. My items are my style on or off Etsy.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

If it's in me, it has to come out the way I want it to. Both my parents are artists, and if there's anything I learned from them, it's to listen to what's coming out of yourself.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

No~I didn't change my style to fit Etsy...
I did however start painting more things...things I didn't paint before. I added things that seem to appeal to people.... Coasters, pendants, and magnets are new things since I started selling on Etsy. Now I am painting eggs...My same style but new pieces. I did think it would be important to keep a broad range of price points.
I think my style is pretty original....even if the things I paint aren't.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

Interesting question... I would say the Etsy has been an inspiration but not style changing. I feel like style is all encompassing - it would mean that my methods, my end priduct, the colors I choose, the way I package my orders, the personality that my pieces have would be altered to conform. I am by no means saying that I am original in everything that I do, but I still am drawn to create products that appeal to my aesthitic and have turned away sales that do not fit into my preferences/style. Am I on the bandwagon for photography props - you betcha, but I did not have to change my style to do this :O) My style was, is and I imagine always will be ecclectic - just as my tastes in music is.

You really made me delve deep into my being as creator/crafter/artist and I found it refreshing! Thanks!

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

Jeananne (and all) - thanks for responses.

I think many folks use their Etsy shops to express what they feel in their soul.

In photography (my area) as in all of art, there are infinite themes and subjects, colors and contrasts, sizes and shapes. One school of though in photography is to put up on Etsy the sort of thing that's selling a lot of already (but then there's lots of competition!)

I've been pleased in recent months that, throughout all my shops, there seems to be a demonstrable growing customer diversity in taste as Etsy grows (by leaps and bounds it grows).

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

While I haven't changed my style as it is expressed in my shop listings I have certainly tweaked the way I "talk" about my items in the products in the listing description. I have always paid attention to detail and quality in my writing and integrating key words into the way I "talk" about my products has definitely altered my writing style. I guess this applies to all of us who are trying to stay relevant in the SEO world.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

I have created and sold many things over the years. Most recently, I began making felted wool mittens (hardly original, but very marketable in WI). However, on Etsy the mitten market is saturated, and also only appeals at certain times of the year for most buyers.

So, I began to pick my brain for other things to create that would use up scraps too small for mitten parts and that would appeal to more people throughout most of the year. Some of these items are not really coming from who I am but I still enjoy making them. For example, I am not really a techie, but I have tried to provide accessories for that market because I thought it could be successful, and it has. I didn't look at what other people in the felted wool shops were making, but just came up with my own ideas until recently. I do occasionally add popular items, for example bunting. But I haven't looked to see if other felted shops are doing it.

I think this discussion touches on whether we are going to be artists, business people, or a combination of both. I think to succeed on Etsy you need to be both. To make a profit as an artist, you have to actually sell your creations. Etsy is a marketplace afterall.

I was attacted to Etsy because of the Etsy "look" i.e.the photos and styling of successful shops. In developing my technique and branding, I have certainly been influenced by it. But because it was part of my aesthetic in the first place I think it is still "me."

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

Sara - exactly. The 'art' vs. 'business' is a key thing.

I think some folks who've altered their products to suit the 'Etsy marketplace' might not be quite so eager to admit it? But I think those people are pragmatic business people, if they see the real need/opportunity to do so. (Some people might call this cynical!)

Some would say there are always outlets off Etsy, etc., in which you can express your true self. Sometimes I think there are more artists than business people on Etsy, but Etsy does teach artists about business whether they want it or not! :)

Is Etsy a hobby or a business, maybe that's another question....

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

My starting point is creating things I want to wear myself, but if people ask for "one of those, but bigger" or "warmer colour" thank I am thrilled and happily oblige.
I think that is only a good thing as long as you keep a balance. That way other people's input becomes a source of inspiration and you try something you might not have.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

I have definitely not changed my style for etsy. And it's funny: my most "me" item, which is not at all west elm/anthrology-ish has gotten the most play in treasuries. It's a clutch with lady's mantel leaves sculpted out of silk on it. It was inspired by an early morning walk in my garden when there were dew drops on the leaves. http://www.etsy.com/listing/92215677/clutch-clutch-bags-clutch-purse-wedding. I think you can't go wrong by staying true to yourself.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

I have changed some but the changes are not bad necessarily, just different. For example I am adding more "feminine" type items then I had in the beginning. But there are tons of women here. I am still doing the "manly" woodworking, but making my target audience more board.

And I am slowly changing the way I am doing my photos for listings, but not sure I will ever get to the bright white backgrounds as it is suggested a lot on Etsy. Have one listing like this and I am just not feeling it.

Congrats to those whom have not changed at all, but not sure how many really haven't. Its hard not too.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

Bill, I don't think that's changing your "style" though. I think we all add new items to our shops, keeping different kinds of customers in mind, but I don't think that's the same as changing your style.

Re: Did you change your style for Etsy?...

To change your style would indicate a lack of artistic integrity. I see a lot of merchandise on Etsy designed obviously with the intent to sell only.
