Craigslist?

I have seen a few etsy ads on my local craigslist. Is this allowed and if so, do you think it is a good idea or way to increase traffic or revenue?

Re: Craigslist?

I used to post items on craigslist with a link back to the shop. It is allowed, what's not allowed is to link in your Etsy listing to other sites where you sell for lower prices (as I understand it). We actually made our very first sale from a craigslist ad, before we made a sale on Etsy. :)

Re: Craigslist?

I sold candles a long time ago, and I snagged a local retail deal through a Craigslist ad.

Re: Craigslist?

I've thought about this, but was hesitant because I'm scared of attracting creeps. Has anyone had trouble with spam?

Re: Craigslist?

I went and posted a few CL posts in surrounding local cities- I've had 10 views in those 5 hours. Pretty good!

Re: Craigslist?

As far as I know this is legal, but "Craig's List Junkies" (or whatever they call themselves) tend to flag listings if they have links to other selling sites. Heck, they tend to flag listings for just about ANYTHING ...

My most recent CL post was in the "Apartments Wanted" section. I'm wanting to find a smoke-free apartment complex. After it was flagged and removed, I went to the CL forums to ask WHY??? Apparently it was flagged by SMOKERS who felt I was being discriminatory in my choice of where I want to live. Sheesh.

Re: Craigslist?

I also find this a genius idea. I think it's a creative idea. This job of making things and selling them is not easy, and if more people can find us this way we should do it. I'm also going to try it myself. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Re: Craigslist?

@Wingnit51 -- what could they do to you through a link to your shop? Not being cheeky -- just curious.

Re: Craigslist?

I just posted two of my vintage furniture pieces at the advice of a friend who deals antiques through Craigslist. Austin Craigslist is different than other cities we have lived in though, many businesses operating there. I will let you know if I have any success! I also have my pieces in a local boutique, so I linked to etsy and my website at www.centraltexasdesignhouse.com.

Re: Craigslist?

I've posted my shop to Craigslist before and got a TON of spam (of the "Are you selling your jewelry and household items to make ends meet -- try our Make-Money-Fast scam instead!" variety.) Which was annoying, but sort of the cost of doing business if you're going to post to CL, at least in my city. You get that even if you post about a yard sale.

At least this time I didn't receive any photos of naked men in response! (which has also happened to me when posting to CL. Chicago CL'ers are a strange bunch.)

Re: Craigslist?

I like this idea too, but I do worry about creeps. I haven't had the best luck with CL. A few months ago I was looking for a "real" job & every single response I got was from a spammer or creep. They either wanted you to pay to fill out their application, they wanted bank account info along with your resume, or they sent you emails & phone calls (as in every 10 minutes) asking you to call them about a job, but the number you were supposed to call was one of the ones that costs an arm & a leg. Sorry to rant. I'm not a big CL fan anymore.

I do like the idea of CL's exposure though. I hope that some of you brave enough to try it will post about your results. And good luck!

Re: Craigslist?

My daughter uses Craigs List all of time to look for various items. I never thought of listing a link to my jewelry. I might try it now after reading these comments!

Re: Craigslist?

A quick update. I only posted at 9:03am, and I have had 11 views on my items posted on Austin Craigslist. 6 on one and 5 on the other. I will let you know if they sell this week.

Re: Craigslist?

Also, I do have my furniture in a local shop, so as far as creeps (which I do worry about), people make an appointment at the shop to see and pick up items. That keeps it safe. I have purchased antiques off of Craiglist but usually send my hubby.
