Coupons - how do they work?

Hi, everyone.

I just activated a coupon for free shipping in my store, it's just that I have no idea how coupons work on Etsy.
Can you, please clarify for me what I'm supposed to do if there is an order, can the customer apply the coupon code in their cart, or as I read somewhere I have to reimburse them for the shipping cost through PayPal account. If that is the case (PayPal) I'll need their e-mail address right?
So basically, what should I do IF I have a sale and there is a coupon code used?

THANK YOU!

If the coupon code is used, you don't need to do anything. The shipping cost will automatically be deducted from the order, and it will show that on the order.

Edited to add: Don't be surprised if buyers don't always use the code - no matter how hard you try, some still miss it, or miss where to enter the code.

Re: Coupons - how do they work?

Thank you so much for answering my question!
I've never used coupons on Etsy and although I'm a shopper for supplies here, I can't recall seeing the coupon "field" through the checkout process.
So if a customer sees the coupon code but doesn't see where it should go before placing the order, are we supposed to reimburse them if they contact us?

Re: Coupons - how do they work?

I would say no to reimbursing them. Just like going out to Target if I forgot my coupon at home I cant go back to Target and ask them to fix it later after the fact.

I would tell them sorry about that. And explain how/where to type in a coupon code and offer them a new coupon code for being a repeat buyer. **that way maybe they will buy more :)

Re: Coupons - how do they work?

I have mixed feelings about reimbursing people if they miss the coupon code field. I've only reimbursed someone once and that was because they put the coupon code in the "note to buyer" section, instead of the code section.

I think if they contact you immediately after & say they missed the coupon, then I'd reimburse them, but it's entirely up to you!

Re: Coupons - how do they work?

I tweet coupon codes and place them on my Facebook page. I have an in shop one right now listed under my shop name. If people do not go into my shop they miss the coupon code. It is designed for people who are shopping at my shop. I have never reimbursed someone for a missed coupon and have NEVER been asked to do so.
Only a handful of people have ever used a coupon code I have offered.

Re: Coupons - how do they work?

I have purchased a ton of items on Etsy. The coupon field has been present on every single transaction. Once you hit cart, you see it directly to the right of the item.
