Copying listings to create new listings

Hello All~

I have been copying my listing and then changing it to fit the new tags and titles for one of our magnets. This way, I don't have to fill in all of the general information and materials tags.

My question is: Does this have the same weight as a totally new listing? Or is Etsy seeing this as a type of renewed item?

Thanks!

I do this. I just make a few tweaks where necessary.

As far as I am aware it has no negative effects. Hope not anyway!

I recently learned that google has changed its search criteria and your shop may not be getting picked up as often because of repetitive listings. I am not sure that it is hurting your search results with Etsy, but it may be with outside searches.

Re: Copying listings to create new listings

Etsy sees it as a new item. You aren't "penalized" in any way, nor do you see a benefit. It's just a new listing.

As far as Google goes, Google made some adjustments to weed out sites that just copy from other sites in an attempt to gain standing in the search results. So you won't want to make your listings identical. That said, I think much of the advice about repetitive content is overblown. Make your descriptions true to your items, don't make your Etsy items/ descriptions identical to another site, and you'll be fine.

I agree with Chris. Google does not weed out products contrary to even what Etsy states in their google feed policy. If this were true, you would only be able to find one of every type of product when searching on the internet. This would also defeat the purpose of many of the shopping sites such as shopping.com.

Re: Copying listings to create new listings

i was told that each listing had to be markedly different to be picked up by google, but honestly as long as the intro is different google seems to pick it. and google crawls my etsy and my dot com about once a week anyway.

Re: Copying listings to create new listings

Good question! I was just wondering something similar. I listed a bunch of new paintings yesterday by copying and then adjusting the colors within the title, tags and description. But I noticed when I typed in "fish painting" in the Etsy search none of the new paintings came up, only the old one?

I'm wondering if there is some sort of glitch/filter that is causing this?

Alisha -- you have an item on p. 1 of those search results :}

It can take a few hours (they say up to 24, but it rarely takes that long) to show up properly. Next time you list items, after you finish, take a break, have a cup of coffee... then check the search. It will be more accurate.

Just to put everyone's mind at ease, I checked with google. Store listings are considered non-malicious duplicate content and are not penalized at all.
