CRAZY to realize!

After some of discussions in this team
-I only today realized that I don't like knitting ! :D

No- seriously !
Now - I don't know what to do!
Since almost all of my shop is knitted mittens that I knit by myself it is quite hard to avoid knitting part. :D

My favorite parts actually are choosing colors ,taking photos and packing..

Is that crazy? Do someone have the same feeling ?

Sincerely
-Aya

Re: CRAZY to realize!

Bit of a pickle you're in!

Maybe its time to give it a little break or you could try your hand at another craft and see how that makes you feel. Something that you could use lots of colours which you could have fun picking etc.

I love making my soaps and lips balms, the only part I don't really like is the part where I have to pack everything up and then go to the PO! But it makes me feel better that someone somewhere wants my items so it makes it worthwhile.

Re: CRAZY to realize!

Are you feeling this way now that it's turned into an obligation or have you always hated it ? Being one of those that turned a hobby into a full-time job, I can testify that it is not always fun.... the operative word being job !

Re: CRAZY to realize!

Some people are really thrilled when they turn a hobby into a way to make a living, but for some of us, turning something that's supposed to be relaxing into a job is a real joy killer. That's one reason I chose to start out with jewelry -- I enjoy making jewelry, but it's not a form of relaxation for me. I save my knitting for relaxing. :)

Re: CRAZY to realize!

Yikes! I fortunately fell in love with crocheting before I started selling. I love to create and didn't want to inundate all my loved ones with stuff they didn't want or need.
Hopefully you can figure out how to either make something else or go in a totally different direction!
Good luck!

Re: CRAZY to realize!

There are times when I get tired of making wreaths and can't bear to look at another vine or twig! That is when I switch to my painting, wire, etc... It also helps to have different kinds of projects going at the same time and even before you get tired of one, switch to another for a few days. At least this works for me. Good luck!

Re: CRAZY to realize!

Would it help to maybe knit a new style or pattern rather than what you've been doing, like mittens?
I know I can get bored with weaving, so I'll try some beading or wire work. OR I just don't go in the craft room for a day or two (unless I have an order, of course!).

Re: CRAZY to realize!

I make glass beads, I find it hard at times to keep coming up with different colours, designs, shapes for my etsy shop..... maybe it's because I also use my own beads to make my own jewellery designs.,

Which creates a conflict as I like to make jewellery with my very plain beads.......... then I get wll confused with what people like what my sell etc...... all in my own head of course!! :@)

Re: CRAZY to realize!

What don't you like about knitting? I have no knowledge of how to knit myself and it seems like it takes an awful lot of patience. I admire anyone that can do it.

Just a thought - since you enjoy the other side of owning a shop maybe you could sell supplies. That way you'll still get to choose the yarn and photograph and pack it up and you could use your knitted creations as examples.

I hope whatever you decide to do is something that you love. Keep us posted please!!!!

Re: CRAZY to realize!

When I get bored of knitting/crocheting I make something just for myself. Something thats really hard and complicated. Something that you could never sell because its taken so long and you would have to charge about £2000 for it! Then I sit back and look at it and think I'm brilliant! I'm currently knitting myself a massive cabled bedspread. Its taken me forever and has cost a small fortune but its making me very happy and is making me fall in love with the sticks again :)

Re: CRAZY to realize!

Your knitting is very beautiful though :) you are very good at it. I agree, your photo are fantastic! If you enjoy photography you should take it up. It may be more competitive though? Good luck :)

Re: CRAZY to realize!

How about selling patterns? You would still have to knit the it up but you could also get test knitters. Also I don't think you hate knitting, I think maybe you haven't knit anything just for the fun of it in a while either for yourself or family/friends.

Re: CRAZY to realize!

I can relate sort of. I LOVE making my items... the first time. Even the second and third time. But when I have several orders that all total up to over 500 roses...... Then I just have keep thinking how lucky I am that have that high of a demand. Honestly though, I do still enjoy making my products, creating new items, packaging, taking photos, and marketing are all my favorite parts of the job. The best part of making the items is definitely seeing the end result. getting to the end can be long and tedious, but then I just love seeing a dozen of my roses all bundled up into a pretty little bouquet and it makes me so happy that I can do this for a living :)

Re: CRAZY to realize!

I got sick of making jewellery a while back, and then I realized it was actually i hated repairing other peoples jewellery - the horrid designs the cheap findings that were making me itch (I'm allergic to nickle) so I just stopped doing repairs. many people got quite shitty with me but stayed true to myself and now I rarely get asked and I can enjoy making again.

Good lucky I don't know what you will do if you canna knit, maybe sell wool and patterns for mittens?

Re: CRAZY to realize!

I would say give it a break and persue other interests. Have you tried crochet? Or if you love photography maybe that. It sounds like you need to recharge your creativity. Perhaps a mini vacation?

Re: CRAZY to realize!

Aya:

Those are gorgeous photographs. I second the vote to consider doing what you love for awhile, and letting someone else do the knitting until you regain your love for knitting (if ever). Surely there's someone on Etsy who would love to knit for you while you offer to take product shots for people who aren't good at the picture taking.

Or maybe you just need a shop vacation. In any case, I always vote with do what you love.

Re: CRAZY to realize!

Have you considered sewing? I'm also a knitter, but just have never considered selling hand knit items b/c it just takes so long. With sewing, the fabric is already made - you don't need to create the fabric like you do when you knit. But you stil get to create, and there are gorgeous fabrics out there. You can still play with color and shape, and design. It's just a bit less time consuming. For example, I've gotten my time per iPad case down to about an hour and a half. Compare that to the amount of time it takes to knit your mittens. Just something to throw out there. Good luck!

Re: CRAZY to realize!

I get into moods when i make a ton of jewelry for a couple weeks and then none for a long time. I don't like taking photos or writing descriptions, I just like making stuff, such as jewelry, designing websites in html, the creationism.

Re: CRAZY to realize!

Just woke up -Thanks a lot guys for all your suggestions!
I really feel better knowing I can talk to you -someone who have the similar difficulties and experiences - owning shop.

I think the thing is that I'm just kind of person who wants to think big, and do fast! :D I can't do small work with hands.
I can make beautiful concepts, but then I need some team that would very quick make that happen - before I get bored.
Maybe It sounds a bit crazy.
Since I don't have that team - i'm like my own slave.

Now when I'm writing all of this- I really don't understand how it is possible that I have knitting shop?..

Re: CRAZY to realize!

Ha- ha Jean! I'm coming ! :D

All day I think about what I want and what should I do.

I have thoughts that maybe this Etsy shop is just a beginning.
That maybe one day I will own something where I can make come true my visions about beauty and clothing - and this experience with this colorful knitting shop will be my small start . :)
