Blogs

I want to set up a blog but I want to use a really nice modern looking blog hosting site (preferably free!).
Can you recommend any? Or have a link to your blog so I can take a look?
Thanks

Re: Blogs

Free wordpress really does kind of suck, especially if you want to customize your design. I have a self-hosted Wordpress blog on Dreamhost - took advantage of a massive sale they had going last summer so it only cost me (er, a friend really, we share webhosting) $20 including the domain, and I can have unlimited subdomains etc. So I have my lixhewett.com landing page and then I have blog.lixhewett.com, photo.lixhewett.com, a site I use to upload stuff for photography and design clients, my upcoming design portfolio, and a friend's blog, katayla.com. The normal rate is $8.95/mo though and I think it's worth it. You can get even a little discount if you use the code LIXISAWESOME. :p

Re: Blogs

I use Wordpress.com. It is free and easy to use. Wordpress.org is the paid site.

There are different templates for layout you can choose from. The one I use cost $20.

My blog is here: http://attention-getting.com

Re: Blogs

I also use Wordpress hosted on my website. It has a few bugs and the choice of plug-ins is sometimes bewildering but overall I like it. Big problem is me not Wordpress; between work at my brick & mortar store, etsy and maintaining my website there's not a lot of time to write.

Re: Blogs

I own my domain through GoDaddy, and it's hooked up to Wordpress. I love the functionality, and GoDaddy is pretty cheap. There's loads of templates on Wordpress, all kinds of ways to personalize your blog. I love it. I'm using the Fruit Shake template with a bit of customization. You can check it out here: www.drakestail.com.

Re: Blogs

Blogger is the best - it's completely free, no hidden charges, and you can make it look however you want very easily. Wordpess have limited templates and generally charge you if you want a custom look. GoDaddy are good and cheap for domain names, often have sales, and have a partnership with Blogger, too, so you can set up and link a domain name to Blogger easier than with any other domain name websites or free hosts.
You have COMPLETE control over Blogger appearance even without HTML knowledge, and because Blogger is so very widely used, there are LOADS of tutorials and help pages for HTML.
People seem to think Wordpress is more professional, but often it ends up making people look silly. Not always, but often. This is because there are few free templates, and most people end up picking the same one out so most websites look the same.
This is my blog: www.ablackbirdsepiphany.co.uk hosted on Blogger, minimal HTML editing, and GoDaddy domain name. The more HTML work (alternatively, if you don't want to build an amazing design and layout yourself, there are a lot of people here on Etsy that sell custom made and premade Blogger templates) the more unique it'll look.

Re: Blogs

I also use blogger and I have found it to be the easiest to navigate and manage. When I started blogging I knew NOTHING about it (still have limited knowledge) and Blogger was the only one I could really figure out and get to look the way I wanted it to. I'm embarrassed to say I couldn't get Wordpress figured out, even though I tried. So Blogger won! I have ZERO complaints. I can get great analytics from Blogger and Google Analytics, so it meets my needs. I have also built in my About.com page into my blogger site so people can access all my social media.

My blog is not about my shop, but I actually wrote about Etsy this week because my Etsy experience has been so great. Feel free to check it out :)

Re: Blogs

I use Wordpress. I love it.

I have help because my husband is a former web programmer. Without that, there would be a bit of a learning curve for me.

Re: Blogs

I use Wordpress. It's free and fairly easy to use. I primarily use it to promote my "custom stories" eg- "give me 15 words and I'll tell you a tale"
