Background for photos?

What would a good background be for my items? I'm really not liking the solid white background. Its too plain. I'll be changing my shop to pretty much all rope bracelets, so I was wondering what kind of background would look good. Thanks!

Re: Background for photos?

Umm what about sea salt? Makes for a more textured white background...and kinda fits with the whole rope bracelet thing.

Though for the record, I think your photos are just fine :)

Re: Background for photos?

I bought a large black square of fabric and i pin it to my wall when I want to take photos. I would use the white back ground but as I use white pearls in my work it wouldnt look as good. You could do a colored back ground or have items in your photos with you to give it a better touch. You can ( thankfully) on etsy get pretty creative with your photos.

Good luck!!!!!

Re: Background for photos?

I like the sea salt idea. Or perhaps sand or a light tan or off white colored background so it isn't so stark? I like the all white backgrounds, but it does make the silver difficult to see because it gets so bright/light. If it helps, I do like your photos as they are, although you might want to check your thumbnails because on some of your bows, only part of the bow shows in the thumbnail photo.

Re: Background for photos?

I think if you got down lower, and took the photo from straight on, you might get a photo that you really like. You could keep the all white too. Kind of like these.

Re: Background for photos?

Items shot on white backgrounds tend to make the front page, so even if you change a few, I would leave several on the white background. It think your photos are terrific as is, but I understand the impulse to change it up.

Re: Background for photos?

I like the white background too but if you wanted a change how about either using props in the photograph to add more colour but still keeping the white ? or maybe a coloured background which you keep the same for each. In some of my photographs I use a blue wood background like this one https://www.etsy.com/listing/100463318/stationary-set-letter-writing-set-tea

to add some colour in as I felt my items would look good against a coloured background. I think as long as the background isn't too busy it will look good on your bracelets.

Re: Background for photos?

Have you thought about modeling some of them? Maybe mix it up with a few of your bracelets on a wrist. I do like your white backgrounds the way they are too.

Re: Background for photos?

I like the white with a soft shadow. Maybe the closer, angled photos like Jenni mentioned? Props are tempting but they almost always distract from the actual item being photographed. In my personal opinion, props are generally only successful for items that need to be staged, like home decor items or something needing to show scale.

Edit- If you DO decide to experiment with props. I would start with white or close to white props. Maybe even start with a white beach wood background instead of an actual prop.

Re: Background for photos?

I am also a fan of the item in the palm of the hand. I don't like to see the fingers, sometimes they are super pretty. I don't like to see a hairy arm, even though I'm Italian. So, it seems, the palm normally looks clean and gives a break to the white background. This is normally nondistracting too.

Re: Background for photos?

Hannah, I personally prefer the white. Less distracting. Like Kathleen says, makes them "pop" and the colors are so vibrant, they deserve.

Re: Background for photos?

I like a soft white background that has a slight tinge of gray. You can get this by using a photo studio box with daylight bulbs (see the top four feature items in the shop I'm posting from for an example). I'd steer away from stark white backgrounds. It can throw off your colors and doesn't look at all natural. I also like the suggestion of modeling the bracelet or holding it in your hand. In my other shop I put the bracelet on a small wine glass and used a soft white background. This is from my other shop, just to show an example (the shop will be closing soon, which is why there's very few items left).

Re: Background for photos?

I think white is the best, I use that on all of my photos, but I get where you're coming from, sometimes I'd like something to happen in my photos as well, but I think for a first photo white is best. I have some ideas on how to switch things up in my photos.

Maybe you could try a very light grey color, that looks nice too, or have a piece of wood to photograph against? Or in a sea shell?

Re: Background for photos?

I understand where you are coming from but honestly white is easiest thing to work with. That being said why not try something that is white and textured - a piece of drift wood painted white, or an old vintage table that is white but has lines/grooves going through it. Then if you really want to add props I would work within the nautical theme - white sea shells, starfish, even light colored sand could look nice. But like others have said make sure the prop is not the focus but something that highlights your item...

Re: Background for photos?

I like white too... but you have some nice suggestions here so if you want to keep it light maybe you can work on texture...
