Attributes? How important are they?

I was just wondering what everyone thinks about the Attribute drop down menus that we have the option of applying to our items. Is it really necessary to put our items into these specific categories?

I have a lot of items that don't necessarily fit into these categories, and while we have the option to create a new category, are they really necessary?

I'm interested to see what everyone thinks about it.

They are not important at all.
Etsy does not use them for anything yet, not even for search.
I don't use them.
