Applying Discount or using Coupon Code?

Which one do you think works better?

Applying your sale discount to the item (like using etsyonsale) or do you think offering a coupon code works better?


Id like to see the success of both types.
Im wondering if offering the discount right up front (like with etsyonsale) --- would generate more sales.

Thoughts?

I had a coupon code for the first 2 days of my sale for Free Shipping, and only about half of my orders used the coupon code. Yesterday I ended up just setting my shop on free shipping so you didn't need to use a coupon code, and I got a lot more sales, I think it's best to make it as easy as possible for your customer.

If you only want to put some things on sale in your shop, the sales discount works best as you cant just apply a coupn code to some items.

Well I just converted over my whole shop to have the 25% off discount applied to every item instead of a coupon code.

Used Etsy On Sale last month for the first time, just to try it out. I like the look of the regular price with the slash through it to show the savings up front to the potential buyer. The sale name (Cyber Monday Etsy, Columbus Day Sale, etc.) can be added to every item description or just certain sections of your shop with no work by you. Adding or deleting all those tags is so easy with EOS, so for you, it saves a lot of time. I think EOS is simpler for the buyer too - they don't have to remember or write down your code to add during check out. No figuring in your head (30% off is HOW much?...let me get my calculator, then I'll decide if I want to buy it).
This is our first Black Friday - Cyber Monday to use Etsy on Sale. We used the coupon codes last year. So far sales are the same year over year, but we still have more than half the day to go.
If anyone wants a referral code for EOS to get 5 free credits, convo me. I'm all for keeping it easy, so for that reason alone, I give it a thumbs up.

I used ShopShaper - but it doesn't show the fancy little slash thru line so im wondering if i should revert it back and then use etsyonsale - only problem is I dont have any credits - i used them all...

Similar response here, 50% of buyers use the discount coupon code even when it is displayed to the right of photo as part of the shop title.

Since I rely on the kindness of treasury curators, I wonder how the title, slash sale header of etsyonsale effects those choices.
Personally I think it looks rather bargain basement.

I have used etsyonsale for tagging, just purchased 10.00 worth of credits since I too, used up my 5 free.

I'm using a coupon code this weekend because I don't have any credits left with EtsyOnSale. I've sold a total of 8 items to three buyers since Saturday and only one used the coupon. I have it posted in every single listing so it's not like it's hidden where they can't see it.

I used the coupon code more as a convenience for myself. It's a lot easier to deactivate a coupon code than it is to change the prices on my listings.

Well I modified all my listings with EtsyonSale.
At least people can now see how much they are saving..

I'm glad I found this thread. I need help deciding too on what sale option to use. I don't sell tangible products. I sell clipart and digital characters. I do not charge a shipping cost because I email my customers their file. So, I couldn't offer free shipping.

I have a discount code generated but i don't know how to apply it to my items? Do I have to make a sales graphic item like i see on some shops?

I don't know anything about ShopShaper or etsyonsale. a search does not bring anything up.

Is there a step by step to use these processes?

Also, once a discount code is applied, does paypal do all the math or is this the shop owners responsibility?

I have to try that Etsyon Sale, I use the coupon codes and half the time people dont use them, which makes me sad. I have refunded before, but it costs me money to do that, so I dont do the refund. So I need to read about the other.
