Anyone have an email list? Advice on creating one?

I've been toying with the idea of creating an email list for some time, as a way to reach out to customers, keep in touch and encourage repeat business. I have a MailChimp account but that's as far as I've gotten.
I get stumped whenever I try to figure out how to build the list.
Has anyone done this and have any good ideas?

I have a Mail Chimp account. When I do markets/shows I put out an email sign up list on the table. I usually get a decent amount of people that sign up.. and it is slowly building our list. We also have a spot on our website for people to sign up.

One idea that seems good is to put a link to sign up in your shop announcement.
