Anyone ever get a request for a ridiculously large order?

I just got one, and I am concerned it's spam. However, I don't get why anyone would spam you with a request for shits and giggles. Any ideas?

How large is 'ridiculously large'?

Do your research - Is their inquiry from a personal or business email address? Do they have a website? Does the contact information in their email match any publically available contact info online?

Re: Anyone ever get a request for a ridiculously large order?

Nope...but I wouldn't necessarily worry. Lots of different people are on here.

Are they asking to purchase wholesale?

If not, your listings seem to have a high quantity. Can they just fill their cart with what you have?

Re: Anyone ever get a request for a ridiculously large order?

That IS an absurdly large amount. Wow.
Have you looked into the legitimacy of the company?
I'd send an initial serious response and ask for more details and just see where it leads. It can't hurt to reply.

For one card style? Hallmark doesn't print that many of a single card.

Would somebody spam you for giggles? Yes because it's (unfortunately) the nature of your particular shop. Same with lingerie (I worked for Victoria's Secret...I've seen it all)

80,000???

You weren't kidding.

That would concern me. That's a whole lotta cards.

Have they provided company information?

Still, it would be an awesome amount of profit. Only 20 cents to set up a private listing and see if they buy it!

Re: Anyone ever get a request for a ridiculously large order?

maybe it was a typo. at a dollar a card that would be enough money for them to make their own card.

Re: Anyone ever get a request for a ridiculously large order?

I've never been asked for anything near that amount! Check on how legitimate the company is- check for any bad feedback they might have- people with blogs- whatever. Be very wary of them trying to whittle down the prices and such- stay wary and think about all your responses carefully just in case.
If it's a real company and ticks the right boxes, I would have to ask for a non returnable deposit. Think about seeing a solicitor and writing up a contract so they can't back out, as there would be also incredible loss if that went down the pan.

Couldn't you get a quote from a online professional print company?
I would think researching your cost per unit would be wise before you answer that request.

Re: Anyone ever get a request for a ridiculously large order?

If that happened to me, I would require a payment upfront to cover the cost of materials, my time, shipping and handling, overhead, etc, everything but profit to ensure that if the deal went south, I wouldn't necessarily be out anything. I generally ask for the entire payment upfront before beginning any kind of custom or large order work but I understand that orders of this size should probably be handled differently.

Re: Anyone ever get a request for a ridiculously large order?

My guess is it's a joke. If it is legit, I'd assume it's from a company that wants to resell them and it would have a professional tone to it. Did it?

Re: Anyone ever get a request for a ridiculously large order?

It's a joke. C'mon people, 80K x $3.50 = $280,000

A professional company could hire 1 graphic artist and 1 copywriter for 1 year and still have enough money leftover to print 80K cards. Not that these cards aren't awesomely hilarious, they are, but be realistic. The only people who spend money like that, is the government.

Re: Anyone ever get a request for a ridiculously large order?

I take back what I said. Hallmark does indeed print 100,000 of a single card. They made 1,400 Valentine's designs and sell 144,000,000 of them

http://www.statisticbrain.com/hallmark-card-statistics/

Maybe it's some crazy Silicon Valley start-up with money to burn and they want them for corporate gifts???? Or maybe somebody wants to re-sell them for Fab.com? In any case, they'd have to pay up front.

Can't wait to hear how this pans out!! Keep us posted!

Re: Anyone ever get a request for a ridiculously large order?

haha, I got quotes from outside companies, because I can't print that myself... but yeah even at 10 cents a card that's still an insane amount. The customer doesn't have a profile or much in regards to when i click on their name. I'll keep you guys posted.

Woo-hoo that would be a sweet profit for you!! My local printers (I do desktop publishing for the PTA) charge $1 sheet minimum.
