Am I THAT bad?

There are so many successful sellers in this team, I KNOW you have advice for me, the thing is, are you wiling to help me out?

Two months ago I re-branded my shop and started listing fine art photography. I am putting great effort in tagging, titles, renewing, search ads and showcase. I am advertising fiercely on design blogs.

I get between 100 and 200 views and about 20 hearts a day.

I've had 2 sales for that period.

This is NOT proportionate to the numbers above, or am I wrong? Can you, as bystanders tell me where I am failing? Am I doing such a bad job? Do my photos appeal to you?

Thank you!

Am I thinking I am

I think your pics are lovely! Maybe it's the pricing? I really don't know what else...

It's not you, it's the nature of the beast. Hang in there, and read this parallel thread to get an idea how others on Etsy are feeling:

Thank you Alison. When I compare my prices to other photographers, they are pretty regular..

Re: Am I THAT bad?

I think I would change your titles a little - your first piece for instance - I would search for a beach photograph, or beach art print - lots of times think like the artist and not the buyer:) There are a few other titles I would change up a bit and make sure your first sentence is as similar to the title as sounds good. Using your title words three times throughout your description will help with outside searches as well. Your photographs are beautiful! Hang in there!

Re: Am I THAT bad?

Your photographs are beautiful!

I buy art prints and when I do I generally am interested in those that show the art staged in a way to give me an idea of how it will look in my own home. Perhaps you could frame a few of your prints and set them over a table with a flower arrangement or a few unlit candles, or on a book shelf with some kitsch or whatever. Something to give your buyer an idea of size and scale and how it might fit into their home.

Re: Am I THAT bad?

I really love your photos!

I can't work out why they aren't selling. As someone who also sells prints but for my illustrations - I know that I for one look for A-size paper, just because I can envision it more. Not sure if you'd be able to add a comparative size to your listing? Or an international method of sizing?I'm not sure.

Your branding and photography work so well together, and your pieces are so creative - i'm personally stumped!

The only other thing, which I don't think is the cause of the problem as you're clearly being found, is that you seem to use the name of the piece first - and after some research, for SEO purposes, it's best to omit your artistic name for the piece as it won't be searched for.

I doubt I was any help there, but I think you just need to persevere and i'm sure things will start to kick off!

Re: Am I THAT bad?

something jumps at me right away. i highly recommend using all of the spaces allowed for pics! use close, far away, another angle, etc.

also, can you put the art into action? show samples of how to hang it or place it on a shelf. potential buyers really need to see the practicality in what they're buying. it might be a pain but i would set up a spot in your house where you can hang the work and take pics. i really think this is important. good luck! favorited an item i LOVE!

Re: Am I THAT bad?

I have to say Sonya, most people dont buy photography much online. I sell ALOT of greeting card here in San Diego, at mail store, some "small" privately owned stores, a couple of parks. I will show and display my stuff in small coffee shops, doctors offices etc. Craft fairs , etc. I havent sold much of anything here on ETSY, fineartamerica, redbubble, facebook, etc. I published a book as well full of beautiful images........ A lady prayed for me once and said I "might" even have a generational curse in my family preventing sales. So i even prayed, and my sales have picked up, but not online.... oh, dah.. I did have ONE sale here on etsy in april. The first one in over a year............one on fineartamerica too............ i store my images on photobucket http://s883.photobucket.com/albums/ac38/NicoleNanette/ DONT GIVE UP .........................

Re: Am I THAT bad?

There is no "standard," or "regular," or "average." It's all different--sometimes you get what seems like a million views yet no sales, and sometimes you get only 3 views and a sale. So there is no "proportionate" because it's all pretty random.

I agree with changing your titles. They're not completely relevant for SEO.

Re: Am I THAT bad?

That's a good point about cards - is there a way you could transfer some of your imagery to other products? I know from having my own physical shop that a good way of selling your work is applying your art to objects that are more integral to the day to day. Especially in a recession. It can be funny how people hold so much stock in a t-shirt for example, and not a piece of art (which maybe cheaper and last forever!)

Your prints could easily lend themselves to Tee's, if you think upon the lines of Urban Outfitters - it's quite en vogue! Cards are always good as a cash cow too!

Re: Am I THAT bad?

Sonya - your photography is positively awesome! I see also that you are quite skilled with altered photos. Here's where and how I found success on etsy....

I started with a nature photography shop (which I have since closed). I thought my work was beautiful, but after spending hundreds of hours promoting, marketing, etc., I had 20 sales in a 6 month period. So I did the market research and came up with a list of criteria based on the successful shops on etsy in the art category. I came up with this:

1. Anything "vintage" is sure to be found.
2. Cute, cute, and more cute
3. Unique and more unique..even weird. The more unique the better.
4. Affordable

My last piece of criteria was that it had to be something that fit into a flat mailer and utilized photo paper, ink, and all the supplies I had already invested in. After much thought and a series of events, I came up with the anthropomorphic work.

You already have super unique items in your shop. I fully believe that if you brand yourself as a certain type of artist and have your altered work be the primary sellers, my guess is that you will see great success. I fully believe people aren't necessarily looking for "beautiful" on etsy when it comes to photography or art. They want unique. Something uncommon. Something that makes them say, oh wow..this is so cool.

You unquestioningly have the talent and skills. Also, I would suggest to build your circles up as much as possible. Spend a lot of time interacting and favoriting others' work. Once you start attracting your audience, your shop will take on a life of its own.

Don't give up. You definitely have what it takes. :)

Re: Am I THAT bad?

You are not bad at all! I think your photos, like everyone else said, are amazing!

However I am not the type who buys photographs for many reasons one is because I am renting in Australian and we are not allowed to put anything on the walls. So small photo frames are kept for family photos to remind me of home.

Having said that, I will buy note, gift or thank you cards, I will buy key chains or other things that you can make your photos into! Maybe you should try to broaden your product line?

Do some research, look at other successful photographers on Etsy and see what they are selling most of.

Good luck and don't give up!

Re: Am I THAT bad?

I have to agree about titles. As an artist also, when i first set up shop, I had all of my paintings listed by titles. I was gently guided to better search words by my rock star techy fiance. ( Thanks God for him is all I can say!) and I find i get a lot more hits. Try to describe it at it's base description. Also run your tag words and titles through google adword to check for relevancy. The other thing I was told is that you should make the first line of your description the same as your title then cram as many of those same words in the rest of the description as well, then repeat them all in your tags. redundancy apparently works!

Re: Am I THAT bad?

Sonya,
My stats are almost identical to yours. Certain holidays or buying seasons will improve the sale number but in general I'm in the same boat as you. Your photos are wonderful and I don't see anything you are doing wrong. I know I could do a better job of marketing and I don't know if that could be your problem too. It does help when I do put in the time. Don't get discouraged though...you have a great product!

Re: Am I THAT bad?

2nding the additional products. put your images on smaller things like cards or just offer smaller sizes. a bunch of $29 images is kinda weird.

there are so many sizes in the world so put a little bit of each.

i personally like squares 4x4 5x5 etc.

i've seen ppl make keychains w/ their art, this is nice if your stuff is quirky.

Re: Am I THAT bad?

Thank you to everyone who took the time to look at my shop and give me advice! You are all precious and I learned something from each of you!

I will work on my titles
I will stage the photos and show how they would look at home
I will offer more sizes
and I will think of products on which to put the photos.

A heartfelt thank you, once again!

All is not lost, right?!
