All over the place!

This is my mind I am talking about. I guess it is just something I have to put up with, but it does drive me a little crazy!

I have ideas like ALL the time. I have a little book where I write them down, but even so, it still drives me mad- I have ideas at the moment for about 4 different lines of products I want to create, and I jump from one to the other like a crazy person! I don't think I will EVER finish my shop, as the ideas seem to be increasing- the more I create, the more I want to create! If I could just magic them all down on paper and have them all listed in my shop I think I would have around 1000 items listed.... in reality this may take me a while!

Do you find you think like this? How do you deal with it?! Right now it is coming up to midnight and I have 'tired eyes', but I want to draw- I really need to get some sleep though, but I hate to stop when I feel like this!!

Thought I would share with like minded people, as the other half (who has gone to bed) would totally NOT get it!

:-D

Re: All over the place!

Exactly my arguement with myself EVERYDAY! If I didn't have to sleep, eat, clean, do laundry, oh and that DAY JOB that drains so much of my creative time, I could have, like a MILLION items listed. *if only*

: )

Re: All over the place!

I don't have a day job at the moment, so one would think I have all the time in the world to create... but with my one-year-old jumping all over the place and my brain being waaay faster than my hands, I really can't keep up with all the ideas I have lol. So, I know how you feel Joanne... but hey, that's still better than to have a creative block :)

Re: All over the place!

Joanne---
I have the same problem!
I have started a BINDER to keep track of all my ideas! The notebook got filled too fast...I sometimes feel that I am almost Manic in my creativity because I get a tsunami flood of ideas...get some sleep!! start carrying aroung a small handheld recorder as the ideas come
I sooo wish I had these fugues as a younger person...with more energy and less responsibility!!
wishing you luck!

Re: All over the place!

That's why I called myself NIGHT OWL CREATES! Don't sleep much and I jump from one thing to the next to the next. I think the "manic" drives my creativity. Without it I don't know if I would be so inclined to do anything..LOL!

Re: All over the place!

Hehe Renee, imagine a million listings, imagine the views you'd get!!

Ivana- I also have a 1yr old and no "day job"- we have a "day and night job"!! creating with him around 'helping' is out of the question! Although I love it when he sees my drawings and goes "ooooooh"! :-) shame I then have to quickly grab them and het them waaaaaay out of his reach lol!

Midnite- lol at the binder- I totally get this! My notebook is quite small and the pages get filled quickly :-) also understand the tsunami reference! It really feels like I am being flooded sometimes!

Glad to know I am not alone!

Re: All over the place!

I will go through and have so many ideas for paintings. I am working on a dog painting right now, but want to move on to so many others. Not real sure what I would start though, so many ideas.
I actually have a nearly finished Angel picture waiting on me as well. Actually I have about 10 pictures I have left over from 2011 that I moved over to my 12 folder for works in progress. When something takes as long as my paintings do it's easy to get distracted and want to do something different. The picture that's my icon took 6 months to finish because I kept doing other things.

Re: All over the place!

I heard that one of the famous artists, I think it was DaVinci, also made notes & drawings, and also put regular daily thoughts into the same notebooks with his art notes, so it must be what all driven artists do. I also heard that people who make lists/notes are much more likely to be at the top percentile of successful people. Keep making notes!

Re: All over the place!

I just bought a new sketchbook today - my last one is just about full! Intellectually, I know that I'm lucky to get done what I do with 3 little ones underfoot (4, 3, and 15 months), but I wish I could get a couple more hours tacked onto the evening (after bedtime, of course!)

Re: All over the place!

Joanne,

I am right there with you. I has driven me crazy and I think....think I found myself a solution.

I just got back from vacation, a wonderful vacation, where I had no computer and could not use my cell phone. During this time I found that my brain shut off. AAhh, right??!! I also realized that in order to complete my "lists" I needed to shut my mind off from time to time.

So I write ideas down, say 20, and then force myself to work on those items only. And not add additional ones until at least 1/2 the list is completed. I know this sounds hard but I find it works. I don't get overwhelmed and I feel a sense of accomplishment.

I don't know how long this will last but I have to give it a try. Otherwise I up at all hours.

Good luck!

Re: All over the place!

Joanne- we are all a little crazy, lol. I have been writing a poetry book for the past 15 years called Orphaned Spiders, I named it when I was in college because all of us artists, I think of us as crazy beautiful spiders spinning amazing webs, kind of going crazy. When the inspiration come, you just can not put it to bed. Anyway, my book when I need, it keeps me sane. :)

This is so me. My life is an endless gorgeous mess of ideas, supplies, fabric, and beads.

I wouldn't have it any other way! :)

Re: All over the place!

I can so relate too! Glad to have found some like-minded people! :) Just this morning I sat down and did a little mind dump... it's hard to focus on anything else when I've got all these ideas swirling around and then I find it hard to stop and write them down, because I just want to get to work on it, so

Kathleen thanks for sharing your wise words and

JPavey, I'm going to have to try your idea too... I get overwhelmed easily and then just don't do anything and that's definitely not going to get me anywhere! :)

like that is how I do.
I batch list items in a clump.
I try to sort them by time of year.
I save the lists and notes for when I am feeling uninspired, so I have something to spark me.

it comes and goes for me-sometimes I have a million ideas and no time to realize them, and other times I have time and energy to make but no ideas

I save em for a rainy day

Re: All over the place!

That's exactly what I experience too Anji! I'll sit down to create and those ideas that were previously swimming around in my head for so many days are suddenly gone! Definitely need to make a habit of writing things down regularly or as I think of them even and then they are there on those "rainy days"!

yup, tons of little moleskin notebooks full of scribbles, and notepad documents on the computer, for me to wade through and feed on when my mind is empty!

Re: All over the place!

here, got my team posts confused, gonna copy/paste my own post from that thread:

My brainstorm lists for various holidays, I thought you guys might like to see em.

I usually work five or six tattoo conventions a year and I have always made my holidays months ahead- sometimes half a year ahead- to give me time to make prints, frame stuff, price things. Like- I work a tattoo convention in Vancouver WA every year, in early february. it usually falls on v-day weekend. I make valentine art in november- make prints, and draw tattoo ideas for that show. that way when the show comes all I have to do is pack the right boxes in the car and go.

Right now I am - just to show you how far out I plan- working on father's day stuff.
I was reading my brainstorming list and figured I'd share this one. I can post other holidays I've done like this for you guys too if you want, and if you want to jump in and add ideas HELL yeah.

I open a blank notepad document and keep it open on my desktop all the time.
when I think of, or see something cool that might fit a holiday, I type or copy paste it in. by the time I've been messing around online I have a list of ideas for art as well as other stuff. Lots of times if I was a sewing or crochet or crafting person I'd get good ideas from it for that- I could see how other people could make stuff- but all I really do is the visual arts so I can't always use these lists fully.

I've recently started also adding "tag ideas" as a second paragraph in these notes to myself.

Re: All over the place!

I use sticky notes and simply MUST get a journal! There are stickys with lists of materials to order, stickys with sketches, stickys with reminders...and they're stuck on everything from tabletops to lampshades..it's ridiculous...I feel like a short order cook!

Yes! I'm so much like this! Lol! I'm usually working on ten different products at once. I'm so scatterbrained sometimes. ;-)
