A dumb shipping question..

I have an accessory item listed which costs $5.00 in shipping when bought by itself.
However, when bought together with one of my pens, shipping is supposed to be free.
I have programmed the shipping profile accordingly.

Yet, customers still get charged the shipping fee even if they buy it together with a pen. This results in having to apologize to the customer and issuing a refund.

What am I doing wrong?

I don't think the current shopping cart can do that. The shopping cart will use the first highest shipping rate then the 2nd rate on all the others.

You can set shipping so the second item is free with another item.

The only way I see is to use a free shipping coupon code?

No question is dumb.

My question for you is; have you created a shipping profile that actually says this? Are you picking that option for the listing?

Karyn, could he put $0 for the additional item on a separate shipping profile?

Ya I don't think it can do that. The additional item shipping cost is added to the original shipping cost so I don't think there's a way to make it free shipping if you buy 2. Having a free shipping coupon might be your best option. Or just state in your listing that the shipping will be refunded if they purchase both items.

If the five dollars is the higher shipping of the two the system will pick that and then the secondary shipping for any other additional items

Each listing can only have 1 shipping profile as far as I know or can figure out.

Just my opinion, I hate it when sellers tell me shipping is refunded, for the simple reason, I feel they should get it right the first time and not MAKE me keep track of refunds due/paid/unpaid back to me. Its a real turn off for me, I would just rather look else where for what I want. My PayPal account already has so many transactions to sort through daily... Don't add work for your customers. Make it easy! :)

Also wanted to say that as a seller as your shop get more sales, why add this extra step to you shipping process, it already takes time, use your time to promote more sales not issue money back for overcharges on shipping.... My 2 cents.


...and from experience, the free shipping coupon works good to a point. When the customer buys 2 or more items, when it doesn't work that well and causes troubles is when the customer only buys 1 item and uses the code anyway. (the code will still work). Then you are stuck in a conversation you don't really want to have with a customer to the effect you still own me money for shipping...Caused negative feeling....

This is correct. The shopping cart takes the HIGHEST shipping price for all items and then applies additional item costs... If the additional item cost is free, then they pay the single item shipping cost. This is not a bug and is the way it has always calculated shipping.

My suggestion would be to note the way the Shipping Calculator works in your shipping policies and listing.
