I recognize that many people don't know how to use the Google Adwords Keyword Planner So I decided to give a tutorial. Everyone wants good SEO and this is a good way to research keywords phrases not only for your titles, but also for your tags.

1. Make an Google account (it's free) or sign in f you already have one.
2. Go to the TOOL tab and drop down to KEYWORD PLANNER
3. Go to SEARCH FOR NEW KEYWORD AND GROUP IDEAS
4 Go down to the third box that says PRODUCT CATEGORY and put in your product or follow the subcategories.
5. Go to the first box YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE and enter in any ideas you have for your item. You must hit enter after each idea.
6. Go to TARGETING and click on Google if you want Google and Search Partners
7. OPTIONAL:Then go to the gray box that says KEYWORD OPTIONS and click on the pencil icon. Turn on the top option that says "Only show ideas closely related to my search terms".
USE THIS FLAG: 1) when you want to only see suggestions very close to the keywords you entered. Do not check this flag if you want to see a larger variety of keywords.
2) The Broad search count should only be used as a guideline to see which keywords are more popular than others. Google no longer shows the Exact search count that would tell use exactly how often each keyword phrase was used each month.

8. Then click on the blue box that says GET IDEAS.

You will then see 2 tabs. The first one AD GROUP IDEAS gives you keyword phrases and their average monthly searches and subcategories. The second one KEYWORD IDEAS show you all the ideas you entered and a general monthly search averages.

Don't worry about the Competition (low, medium, high) as it only pertains to businesses paying for Google ads.

Also up at the top of the page you will see your product or service ideas (all the ideas you entered for your item(s). To the right you can MODIFY SEARCH. When you click on that, it will bring you back to your original ideas so you can eliminate or add more ideas.

I hope this helps everyone with their SEO.

Val,

Just wait a little while and try again. Happens to me a lot but it's something on Google's end and everything starts working again.

Tiffany,

You do not have to enter a daily budget but you do have to enter a bid amount to go to the next step. Just use any dollar amount unless you are planning on running Google, ads. If you are running Google Ads, then enter how much you would want to spend on each click on your ad.

Thanks for the information. I am having trouble opening the account for adwords. It is asking for my URL. and I put in my Etsy URL which is the only one i have, but it won't take it. Do I have to have a separate website to get an adwords account?

Kelly- when you're in the tools section, don't use the square that says "Your Landing Page" Use the other 2 sections.

Re: How to use Google Adwords Keyword Planner

OK, I've browsed through all 19 pages of this thread to make sure I'm not asking questions that have already been answered and here is my issue: I decided a few days ago to try to tackle google adwords so I went and logged in and put my etsy url. Then I read, just now, that if you put in your etsy url it will just give you keywords that are already driving traffic to your shop. So now I'm trying to start over but with my gmail account it goes right back to the list of keywords it's already found for me so I think it's still linked to my etsy store which is not going to help me. So do I need to create a whole new gmail account? Also, I never got to the page with 'tools' either by skipping the 'guided set-up' or not. HELP!!
I hope this is making sense....

Emily,

Not so long ago I did a blog about SEO and long tail keywords. In this blog is information about how to get through with a new account. There is some screen shots as well. Perhaps that will help you.

Also if all else fails, start a new account. Here's the link to my blog:

If you're still having trouble, convo me and I will see what I can do to help.

I'm still having issues but it's been a long night so I'll send you a convo tomorrow. Thank you so much for offering to help! Also, just scrolled through the blog tutorial to the part where you add up all the possible different long tail keywords and am having that great "Aha!" moment! Thank you so much! I'll be in touch!

I am totally confused by this. Why am I being asked to add billing/ credit card info if the keyword planner is free? Would someone be available to help me with this?

Ashlie,
When you get to the billing/ credit card section, just back arrow out of it. Then it will be free. That's what I did for another account of mine and it worked. DON'T GIVE THEM THAT INFO.

if it doesn't work, then let me know.

My account doesn't seem to show Tools at all. It just goes directly to how much do you want to spend. The only free thing I saw was a free help line.

Diane,

When you get to the spend step, used the back arrow to the beginning. Then sign in. It should work if I remember correctly. Here's the steps I used in my blog with pics to help you out. You have to read down a few paragraphs, but I think the pics will help you out.

When I enter keywords like "hoop earrings" in the tab of Ad group ideas appears - no ideas were returned for your query. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong?

I just went into and out of the Billing Section without any problem. Is there any piece of information that is missing that Google might be waiting for you to enter?

I spent a lot of time on Google adwords the other day and found that "Newborn Baby Shoes 0-3 months" was the highest searched keyword phrase in the product line I am listed in - baby booties. Here is my question, do you think that someone looking for baby "shoes" would actually be interested in knit baby "booties"? I think of them as different items. If you were a buyer would you buy hand knit booties if you had searched for shoes?
