I started it about a month ago, and I'm finding it more handy than I thought I would. I decided to make my personal page private & just for people I know IRL because I was starting to get weird spam messages from people I accepted. What I found with a fan page is that it uses google analytics to track when people are viewing my page, what posts they are viewing, and keeps track of interactions. It also keeps info about the demographics of age groups/gender/ and location of who is interested. I have it set up that when I post to my blog it sends a link to my facebook page, which also in turn updates my twitter feed. I'd say if you use facebook to network/advertise getting a fan page is something to look into.
