Getting listed on first pages of category and cat home pages

Hello! I'm new to selling on Etsy so apologies if this is an old question ... but how does Etsy choose which items to put on the first pages of a category?

For example, if you click into "Jewellery" and then "necklaces", how does Etsy decide the order in which items are listed? I have a feeling this has to do with SEO but is that right? Is there anything I can do to improve my chances of showing up on the first few pages of a category?

Also, on the "jewellery" page where it lists the different categories (earrings, necklace, etc) there is 1 image to represent each category - how are these chosen?

I have quite a lot of items listed but when i check search i see just one of my items and lots of them says zero views to the listing. can anyone help me with this. I have this listing for almost a month and made zero sales.

I am still learning the ropes but it took me months to get my first sale. I do know that it helps to belong to team and promote your items that way as well as making treasuries so that your shop is "out there". Redoing photos, shuffling your inventory around and renewing items before you need to also helps to bump your item up in it's category.

Thanks Petrina, I do tend to re-do photos a lot (mostly because I'm still learning and have a lot to improve on my photos!) but I didn't realise that things like shuffling inventory and renewing items could affect this .. really helpful to know!
