Treasuries for Newbies

I'm sure there are a lot of lurkers that would like to know, as I do...Much, Much more about Treasury Creation.

I tried to make a treasury with little success, none of the pictures never showed.

I just tried again and it looks daunting AND a whole lot of work. The only way I could see is to open another window, sign in to my Etsy, and find my favs to copy and paste into the Treasury creation page. ??? Now is it just me or is that not a BUNCH of work? There has to be an easier way. If you search from the creation page then you would navigate away from the page, right?

ANDDDDDDDD ... what makes a beautiful Treasury? What makes a treasury work from a marketing standpoint? How do you market treasuries? Where does the treasury show in my store.

Umm, what else?

I really wish some experts, and I mean that in the most respectful way, would chime in and give some lessons...like you don't have products to create and a store to run :-)

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

Here is a link to an etsy tool I have used to make treasuries.
http://www.etsy.com/poster_sketch.php

For your problem with the pictures not appearing after you copied and pasted the listing ID number into the box did you click on the blue OK located right next to it? Clicking the OK should made it the photo appear. Only click the SAVE button at the bottom of the page when you are totally finished with your treasury and want to put it out for all to see live.

I've only made two treasuries so I’m not really that experienced but I hope this solves your photo problem.

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

I've noticed the issues with the treasuries. I do them on both shops and after pasting in the number for the item I have to hit the button an average of three times for it to finally show for each item. I've gotten used to doing the "spazzy click" until I see the rotating circle appear showing it's loading the photo.

As far as how I do them, I open two tabs on my browser. One has the treasury I'm working on, and the other is where I browse and look for items. It's important to not accidently hit back on the one you're working on or it will clear it.

Once I'm done and I've saved it I right click each shop name and choose open in another tab. I do this one row at a time. The very first one I put treasury in the subject field, and then the link etc in the body. I then copy the body of that. From then on you can just type T in the subject and Treasury will show and you can just choose it, and then you right click and paste in the body of the convo. It might sound like a lot but once you get the hang of it you can go pretty quick kicking out a row at a time with open, open, open, paste paste paste.

:) Hope that helps

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

As far as what makes a beautiful treasury I think that's in the eye of the beholder. As far as front page goes they look for not adding in your own items, items with great photos, and trying to fit in that months themes they provide as far as I've heard. I've not had any make it to the front page.

From a marketing standpoint, even though you're not putting your own items in there curiosity alot of times will bring viewers of treasuries to your shop to see what kind of items you yourself sell. I've actually had a few sales about an hour after doing treasuries and on days I do them I've noticed a higher view count on my items.

The treasuries you make will show in your profile. I don't think you can make those private unless you make the treasury itself private. Which you might if you were say making a list of items you wanted to get for a certain holiday or something. If you want you can check out mine on this shop or on QualityCollectibles my other shop by going to the profile and you'll see what I mean.

And lastly as far as getting the word out I'd recommend contacting the people you put in your treasuries. It's supposed to show in activity feed, but it doesn't always do that and sometimes people will miss that anyway. On almost all the ones I've found my items in by seeing it in activity feed and the person didn't contact me I've noticed they've had low views. Usually people who are in the treasury will help out by placing a link to it on their Facebook, Myspace, Twitter etc because they are thrilled they're in one. You can do that as well.

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

I just noticed there is a Treasury team, invite only. The real rub I have joining that team is that you must commit to 5 Treasuries a month, featuring at least 5 members of the team. It might be just me but that seems excessive and a lot of time that I just don't have. And lastly, I don't want to be mandated what I HAVE to do to be part of a team..but that's just me.

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

I haven't tried postersketch yet - I keep meaning to!

Here's the way I do it. I know it sound's neanderthal because it actully involves a pencil & paper. I search for my treasury items before I even open the treasury page. I write down the item numbers to 16 items. You don't even have to click on the item to pull up the full item description because if you just hover over the item the item number will show at the bottom bar on your page. Then I open treasury and just type in the numbers. I know it sounds like more work, but it is actually pretty fast & it eliminates all the clicking back & forth between tabs.

To convo, after I've saved the treasury, I copy the treasury URL from the top of the page, click on the first item in my treasury. When it brings you to the item, click contact. This way when you convo, their item URL shows up in the subject. Then in the body I type "You've been treasured!" and paste the treasury URL. Copy this body & back page to the treasury & go to the next item, click, contact, paste.

If you are interested in making treasuries with the benefits of a group but not the hassle of a team, check this out:

http://treasurychallengenonteam.blogspot.com/

It's NOT a team, anyone can participate. We make one treasury a week, but you only have to do it when you want to. Most peole do it every week because it's easy & fun! We start with an "inspiration" item from one shop. Everyone makes a treasury based on & including that item. At the end of the week, the person who's item it is picks their favorite treasury. The curator of that treasury gets to provide the inspiration item for the next week from their shop.
If you happen to have the inspiration item that week you get it into well over 100 treasuries! Several have made the FP. Even if you are just a participant, you'll get into a lot of treasuries because we tag our items & feature each others shops a lot. The beauty is, you don't have to limit yourself to featuring just the shops in the group because it's NOT a team. So it won't show in your profile. So there are no rules. So you can't get rejected. SO it's just FUN! Everyone that tries it, loves it. It's a great group of people, very positive & reaffirming. My views actually noticably went up after joining this group.

Sorry this was soooo long!

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

Marking for all the great info and tips. I haven't made any treasuries yet and I've been here over a year and have always wanted to but didn't know how nor have the brain energy to try and figure it out. Now I have the steps I need, yea!

Almost everyday I look through them when I log on in the mornings while I wake up. They inspire me and I've hearted (and bought) many wonderful items that way. It's time to go make one...

If the item name showed but the pics didn't, it's likely you need to clear your browser's cache. Could other folks see the pics? That's when you know it's your machine.

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

OMG you guys are so great but I do have another question. There is an option to use item # or URL, which do you use? The last time I tried it I used the actual URL of each item, saved the treasury, sent the convo's and one of the people responded she could not see any pics???? Maybe I'm a complete dumb a.. and quite literal by nature but this has me stumped.

Again, I will chase all the links provided and learn from you pro's and I thank you for your time in this thread! Karen

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

I've never done it using URLs so I don't really know. It should work. Are you sure you hit save when you finished?

Thanks for the info. I like the paper/pencil method. I feel safer having it written down.

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

rrizzart, I'm not sure of anything I did. The picture nor the item description showed up. It did say in my profile that I had created 2 treas. and they were blank! I'm going to try it again this weekend.

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

In the URL is a number. I just copy and paste that without using the whole URL. I've never tried the whole URL so not sure on how well it works, but was reading a post earlier on the forums someone having trouble with attempting to use the whole thing.

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

Oh, and you should see the pics there before saving. If you do see the pics before saving and they're not seeing them then that sounds like a technical issue/bug perhaps?

Next time you make one, if you'd like, shoot me a convo with the link maybe so I can see what they're seeing on their end? That might help some.

Re: Treasuries for Newbies

So OK ladies I just opened the "treasury" page, stared at it for several minutes...and closed the page. I went over to my etsy page and just re-listed a couple of items instead. geesh...and the fact is, my pics are so bad now that I really don't want to attract too much attention ...it's a long story. :-(

:( Pics can be a bugger I know. Took me forever to redo mine on my other shop after figuring out my camera and lighting issues. This one can still use some work though...
