picture sizes on blog posts

How big (file size) should a picture be at the most on a blog post? If it's a picture-heavy post, is there a "rule" as to the maximum combined size of all the pictures?

I use Photoshop and I "save for web" so that each pic is less than 100KB but sometimes they are too grainy... just wondering how big I can go before it would take too long to load a page...

I try not to exceed 200 KB, and it seems to be working well. I checked my websites on differnt computers and never noticed problem with loading.

Hmmm...I put MASSIVE photos on my blog. Maybe I should tone it down...

In Photoshop, just make sure it's saved at 72 DPI (not 300, which is for print), and make sure all layers are flattened. You should be able to save it at the maximum .png or .jpeg and have it still load well. My blog is very image heavy but I don't want to sacrifice quality, and this seems to work well . :)

Thanks for the info, all. For some reason, there are just a few pics that look really bad when saved at about 100KB/72 DPI (displayed at 400 pixels wide), even though when you click on the picture and it loads in a new page, it looks really good!

If anyone else has any info to share, that would be great, too!

I just make them a size that balances the look of the text with the picture, with varying degrees of success.

hmm.. I use large photos, but use bloggers's size changer-thingy, usually set it at small or medium.
