Rude Comments?

Have you had any??
How do you deal with them and how do you not let them get you down?

Someone posted on my personal Facebook the following
"your stuff is bullshit my poop has more creativity"

This was in response to me stating that I don't think having a college education makes someone educated and that I plan on working for myself.

Honestly, I cried. HAH. for like an hour... Then I pulled it together and realized there will be people out there that will always try to bring you down. But it's still bugging me. I just don't understand how someone could say such a hurtful thing... I get it not everyone is going to like my stuff... but I have honestly been putting my all into my shop and blog =/

Re: Rude Comments?

when people can't argue methodically, they usually resort to personal attacks.

It's understandable to be upset.

and in modern art, that person's poop could probably be an exhibit.

Re: Rude Comments?

Ever hear the saying "kids are mean"?
Well kids grow up, and nothing changes.

It's hard not to take it to heart, but just remember...
Kids are mean.

Re: Rude Comments?

I have my "go to" person when I need someone to give me an honest opinion that I can trust or when I need to rant . I know this person's opinion is based on fact and not ego or resentment or any other negative place.

Even with that, in the end, it is up to me to make the final decision.

kudos to you for realising that "there will be people out there that will always try to bring you down." Looks like you're in the process of getting a thicker skin.

Re: Rude Comments?

How old are they? Wow, don't even let that remark into your life. Delete and move on. You are quite talented and the fact that you are gutsy enough to want to work for yourself is a testament to your courage and creativity. Surround yourself with people who believe in you- we do :)

Re: Rude Comments?

Awww, that sucks. :( The best advice I can give is to try not to take it personally. When you run a business or are in the "public eye" in any way, for 500 people who have something nice to say, 1 person is going to have something mean to say. I've had my other company (Mountains of the Moon) for over 10 years, and I can't tell you how many rude emails I've gotten... I might get hundreds of sweet emails, but it's the 1 rude one that always sticks. Usually it's someone telling me that my prices are too high and I'm trying to rip them off. If they're semi-nice about it, I'll take the time to reply and explain how much it costs to make eco-friendly clothing locally. If they're rude, I hit delete. I try to focus on the positive and not take it personally - it is hard though, especially when it's about your work. Just think about all of the people who love your work, and have compassion for the person who posted that and the fact that he or she is likely a pretty sad individual in generel. (They were probably jealous anyway).

Re: Rude Comments?

Adelyn, I'm sorry to hear about that comment. At a glance it looks like someone is just messing with you for kicks. Don't give their opinion any weight because they have no proof to support it. I know it's easier said than done. I think you should delete the comment. It's neither appropriate or constructive in any way. Best wishes :)

Re: Rude Comments?

Hi, Kristan. It might help to remember this when you're being insulted as well as when you're being flattered: "Consider the source." Was it anonymous? If you know who it was, did it come from someone you respect? If not, how much are you going to let it matter to you?

A comment at the level of "your stuff is bullshit my poop has more creativity" speaks volumes about the person behind it. I could really go to town and pick it apart, and in the process I hope you can see how to view things like this in the future.

First, the person uses lowbrow language and cannot manage to string together one sentence with any punctuation and capitalization (granted, this only matters to some people—myself included, as I am a writer/editor by profession). Second, the lack of manners evident in this person automatically lowers my esteem for them, and when I don't respect a person I don't give a damn what they think—of me or of anything else. Third, there is no foundation for the argument. HOW is his/her poop more creative? Any proof offered? Pictures? Concrete examples? Logical reasoning? Fourth, if the person uses poop as a gauge of creativity, is he or she mentally stable? Do you want to engage in a battle of wits with a person who is unarmed?

A bully uses putdowns to feel better about himself/herself.

WHAT?! I saw that post on your facebook but I didn't see that comment! I don't understand, was it an anonymous comment or something? A "friend" wouldn't say that to you right?? What a jerk, I'm sorry girl, don't let it get to you!

Re: Rude Comments?

Only someone who feels threatened or envious will say such a thing. That's their way of trying to bring you down to their level. I can understand how this comment would hurt your feelings; it would hurt mine too, but know that that’s just one idiot’s opinion. I know it is easier said than done, but just ignore it and move on. By the way, your shop is beautiful :o)

Re: Rude Comments?

I looked at your shop and that person is wrong!

Don't worry about the wrong ones. Focus on who you are and from what I can tell by your shop you are good and positive!

Re: Rude Comments?

I get rude comments too but usually it is about mentioning my adoption in my store. I am constantly surprise by coldness of people online. I think that because they are hiding behind a computer and not saying it to your face they think that they can say what ever they want. These comments are not true. Your work is beautiful and my adoption is wonderful. I have to admit, the comments get to me to sometimes but you just have to tell yourself that unless the comment is coming from someone you respect then it means nothing. I have continued to tell the truth, that my store supports our adoption, regardless of people's opinions and you should continue to do your work regardless of the occasional idiot! Rock on :)

Re: Rude Comments?

You don't need that kind of treatment. People that aren't into the arts don't understand how hard it is to put you heart on the line and to put yourself out there.

Those kind of peeps, I unfriend.

Re: Rude Comments?

Totally ignore personal attacks, it shows no maturity, probably low self esteem on their part, and definitely not worth worrying about!

Re: Rude Comments?

personally, i would just block that person. who needs it? there is no excuse for such ridiculous behavior. i think people forget that the internet is very public and that their words last forever....you and they can delete them but they will remain in cyberspace and be searchable. i'm sorry, this sort of behavior boggles my mind....

i'm sorry your feelings were hurt...sheesh...so nasty and unnecessary and mean....block that person.

Re: Rude Comments?

never had anyone leave nasty comments on any one of my posts, but someone did post a comment on my husband's post saying that his tattoo designs are horrible, I deleted it as soon as I saw it, never even shown it to him. Some people have too much time on their hands and too little brain in their heads.

Ignore them and don't let it get to you. You know your own worth, people who buy from you know it, that's all that counts.

I personally agree about college, I went through a few years of nursing school and quit only one semester before graduating, I learned more about medicine since then studying on my own than I did in college. Same goes for art, some of the best artists out there are self taught. Yet I keep on having people come to me and ask if I go to art school, when I say "no" they tell me I should because I'm really good.
