... and the worst offender is that hidden captcha - where I take time to write a comment, click post and WHAM now I have to figure these words out!

I did! I removed the captcha from my blog a few weeks ago and have only gotten one spammy comment since, but I think it was manually put in by a human, anyway.

I will say though that on my wordpress account through my domain, I do get alot. Blogger I have not receved any.

I get spam all the time. I get as many spam comments as I do real ones. I don't use captcha though because I find it personally annoying but I do moderate every comment.

If I attract spam does that mean my blog is crap quality writing? Does it mean anything? There's one post in particular that gets it a lot. (It's always on older posts only.)

I was told spam usually occurs on older posts, so I did set it to moderate comments on posts older than 21 days. Your posts must have lots of juicy keywords that the spam bots like, fairycard.

Hmmm didn't notice you could set a time limit. I'll think about that. :)

I have never had any spam.

I can tell you though... A MILLION times I have commented and as I am hitting the x to leave a sight I see the captcha and then boom I'm off the site. Do you think I'm going to bother to go back and re-comment...Hell no! Take it off and just keep on top of your comments. I have comments on EVERY SINGLE POST now.

I don't personally mind it. But if it keeps others from commenting on my blog, I'll be sure to remove it!
I'll get it done when I get home from work in the morning.

And thanks for the tip about moderation on older posts only...I'll def. look into that!

Thanks for the tip on older posts comments - will set that setting just in case. For my blog captcha was never turned on and I've only gotten one spam that did get caught in the blogger spam filter so I just deleted it. (Under Design, Comments tab, Spam)

At least if someone does want to use captcha it should show up from the beginning and not be a surprise after I've written! [I'll get off my soapbox now...] :P

Yeah, the odds of real comments coming in on older posts are slim, getting spam doesnt mean that your writing is crap... if anything it is the opposite, your site is appealing enough for the bots to post to. The strategy of using older posts is based on the idea that you as the author are likely not even checking them, and they can post links to improve their site stats on pages where they dont belong.
