Commenting on Blogs

Do you even care?

I was on chit chatting on a Facebook blogging group yesterday, and someone was venting their frustration with the lack of comments on their posts. Bloggers were giving solutions about how to get more comments, and suggesting comment swap teams - and they even suggested going to other people's blogs and commenting just for the sake of maybe getting a comment back out of politeness.

I was completely turned off. I even felt a little gross. Then one lone responder came in with beautiful advice: Why care about comments anyway? To that blogger, comments just meant work, time responding, wondering if the other person got their response, time consuming, etc. They measured the success of their blog through views, and SHARES ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

Wow.

I think we may have shifted our focus in the blogging world - I think that now, we show our like of work by sharing, on our newsfeeds, pinterest boards, and facebook pages.

How do you show appreciation for blogs you like and how do you like readers to show appreciation for your blogs?

If you aren't getting any comments, you might want to check your security settings.

Sometimes I want to comment, but can't.

It's true that commenting on blogs will often get you comments in return, but it should be about creating real connections with others.

Re: Commenting on Blogs

Hi Ryan -

Thanks for letting me know about the hiccup on my blog! And thanks for visiting enough to notice.

I still appreciate comments, I'm just starting to think that comments in general are not the best way to show appreciation anymore. Sharing is...

We will see how that keeps shifting.

Re: Commenting on Blogs

I agree with Ryan about building true connections. I'd like to think that those who comment on my blog do so because they truly like the content and it inspires them to want to discuss it, and I welcome that. I do the same with other's blogs. I definitely don't want it to be artificial.

Re: Commenting on Blogs

I leave meaningful comments on posts that I find inspiring, helpful or just grab my attention in some way. I do this consistently on blogs I have been following for a long time. More often than not I do get a reciprocal comment on a future post, Also, I promote some of my significant posts on linkedin, instagram etc and a few come over to check out / comment on that post.
